Dear Chair Beth Jaeger and Commission Members:
I want first to share my gratitude for your February 22, 2021 memorandum regarding the
"Equity and Inclusion Office (Leadership)." Thank you for your interest and support.
I am glad that members of the Human Relations Commission could engage in one of
our listening sessions, and I want to follow up on your request for further participation.
Please allow me to respond to your ideas for further involvement:
1. Review and provide feedback on the information gleaned from the listening
sessions that will influence the final job description for the leader of this new
Office.
A high-level summary of the themes shared will be prepared and made
available to the more than 200 individuals who participated in a listening
session. I will ask Carol Thomas to be sure you receive a copy of the
summary. Internal and external colleagues are working together on a
position description that will be used for the recruitment and to inform the
initial roles and expectations, and the community feedback will inform their
work. While additional feedback on the description itself is not a step in
the recruitment effort, I am confident that you will see a direct connection
between the listening sessions' themes and the primary accountabilities
and required capabilities of the role.
2. Serve on the search committee convened to select the individual who will provide
a consistent approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion across all City operations
and community initiatives.
We will create interview panels of internal and external colleagues, and we
have had several individuals within our organization and the community
asked to serve on a panel. I would welcome one member of the Human
Relations Commission to participate on a panel.

3. Participate in forums with finalists.
We will have a community forum, and as always, we will make sure all of
our Board and Commission members are invited. If you attended one of
the 2020 forums for the Chief Judge or Deputy City Manager, you might
know we solicit questions ahead of time to consider and during the forum.
We also ask for online feedback from any viewer, and often some chose
to write directly to a City staff member.
Again, I am grateful for your interest and your ongoing service and contribution to our
community.
