Subject: [EXTERNAL] Introduction
Hi Melanie,
Thank you for serving the community on the City Council. That’s a very important job and I
truly applaud you for the sacrifice you will make for the opportunity to serve.
I’m writing to share a concern I have about the process of communicating with council on
important issues. When one party has no voice in a communication process, it’s impossible
for that to happen. You have a response from us to the work session in council’s packet this
week. But that is just one way information two weeks later, it’s not effective communication
which requires dialogue. There is so much information council doesn’t get with the current
process. It’s very unfair to ask staff to fully understand and communicate someone else’s
efforts. It’s an impossible task for them, and just not a fair expectation no matter how good
they are. (And they are excellent)
What y’all miss most is the context of the information you are being presented. It’s the
“why” and “how” and the “what if” that’s missing. All you are given is the “what”, sort of.
In the future I hope there is opportunity for real discussion, so Council can fully understand
the issues before them. More than anything else I want y’all to have the whole picture because
it’s far too easy to misunderstand or make assumptions that aren’t accurate.
No matter what some think, these issues are not about us. Everything we do is to enable great
community built on Fort Collins values and vision. That takes communicating well because
the issues are serious, complex and require all of us. The city cannot build community by
itself, and people like me can’t build great community without the city. It’s a team effort, and
it really needs to be.
Respectfully for your consideration,
Max
