I think Jess would be an excellent council member as her application was professional. She
expressed many ideas that I found to be progressive and exactly what Fort Collins needs,
especially in regards to COVID-19. I think that her work at CSU makes her a valuable
community member as she understands the students who call Fort Collins their home away
from home. One thing I hear echoed from students is that they don't feel welcome in Fort
Collins and I think Jess could bride that gap.

I think Jessica Dyrdhal should be appointed as city council member. She’s been active in
our community through volunteer work. She’s well-qualified and educated but more than
that she knows what it is to be a member of this community and knows what the average
citizen wants out of our city and what our goals should be. To me there are a lot of issues that
should be taking priority right now and her campaign matches with my priorities exactly. I
hope you will consider her.

Jessica Dyrdahl is incredibly motivated, open minded, and diligent. Jess will always be sure to
find solutions that will work for everyone and make sure that everyone feels heard. Jess will
be what is best for the many students who call Fort Collins home, but will also understand and
sympathize with non-student residents of the city. My experiences with Jess have been nothing
but pleasant. She is a wonderful human being and Fort Collins would be lucky to have her
serve on City Council. I know Jess as a mentor and co-worker through the Student Leadership
and Involvement office as well as the former director of the President’s Leadership
Program at CSU, which I am completing this year to receive a minor in. Neither of these
programs would be anywhere near as wonderful as they are now without Jess. Please choose
to elect her to the board.

I would like to express my support for Jess Dyrdahl. I meet Jess through Leadership Fort
Collins and have been so impressed with her commitment to our community, to diversity and
leadership. She works incredibly hard and brings an important voice to our community. She
represents a youth vote by her connection to CSU and the late 20-30 crowds who faces so
many of the real issues in Fort Collins: home prices, day care costs, etc. Jess will be a fantastic
addition to Council. Thank you.

Council Members, I strongly encourage the selection of Jessica (Jess) Dyrdahl for the council
vacancy. I had the good fortune of meeting Jess when I first moved to Fort Collins over 10
years ago and have been immensely grateful for her friendship ever since. I do not make this
statement lightly. Over the years, I have come to realize how rare of an individual Jess is. She
is the true embodiment of the type of person most of us strive to be. A genuinely good person
through and through with an inherent passion for social justice and a natural talent for building
community. The council and all members of the Fort Collins community are exceptionally
fortunate to have an individual such as Jess investing their time, energy, and skills for the
benefit of us all. One of Jess’ qualities that I am in continual awe of is her ability to single-
handedly create an atmosphere of engagement with a group or crowd of folks. Such an ability
undoubtedly requires a concerted effort, though Jess appears to accomplish such feats
effortlessly. A key component of this ability is her fearless humility. She approaches every
person and every situation with openness and genuine curiosity, ideal qualities for a public
official. Apart from her interpersonal skills, Jess is a highly knowledgeable and thoughtful
individual whose outlook and views span the gamut of Fort Collins as a whole. The inclusion
of Jess on the council will bring valuable insight and a natural “bridge†between
generational viewpoints. Jess is an ideal candidate for city council and it is my sincerest hope
that the council members are able to see the skills, knowledge, and myriad of benefits that Jess
will bring to the council and this wonderful city. Thank You

I truly cannot think of a better candidate for the D4 seat than Jessica Dyrdahl. Having worked
with her closely over the past three years, I can say that I have yet to witness anyone who is
more committed and dedicated to true civic engagement than she is, meaning that she models
what it means to transform your geographical location into true, active membership within a
greater community every day. I have witnessed the substantial effort Jessica has poured into
understanding the most pressing needs and populations within the district, and am confident
that she would provide both excellent representation and continued advocacy in this position.

Good morning,
As you look to fill the City Council seat, be sure a diversity of ideas is represented. Not only one's gender, race and
economic status but true diversity of thought or we risk overcompensating for our challenges by over-governing and
stifling the most innovative in our community. We risk making our blind-spots bigger if we don't have a variety of
ideals represented. We need the voices of true small business leaders with heart for the city and it's people.
Thank you for serving our city,

One question that needs to be asked is their viewpoint on the u + 2 ordinance. Protecting neighborhoods for single
family homes is critical.
Some people use code words like affordable housing to attack the ordinance. Allowing homes to have more than
three occupants actually makes these homes less affordable to a renting family and would drive up the price of the
home when sold as it could command a higher rental income.
Thank you. Paul Anderson.

Dear Mayor Troxell and members of council,
It is with great pleasure that I write this email of endorsement and support for Erin Hottenstein
to fill the vacant District four City Council seat. Mrs. Hottenstein is highly qualified with a
wide range of experience that demonstrates the knowledge and skills to become an integral
part of city council. Alongside her qualifications, she has the time, availability, and dedication
the office deserves. Mrs. Hottenstein is a strong advocate for small businesses and an
advocate for affordable housing. She also has a strong sense of vision and purpose for the
city.
As a community member, Mrs. Hottenstein is passionate and committed to her community.
Her ability to bring people together to work towards a common goal whether it is through
volunteering or promoting women’s leadership is admirable. I have had the privilege to meet
with Mrs. Hottenstein at a couple of events she hosted for Colorado 50/50, she is focused and
a believer in strong leadership . As the Founder of Colorado 50/50, I have seen Mrs.
Hottenstein collaborate with elected officials and candidates running for office in all political
aspirations which is vital in creating partnerships. As a government reporter, she has an
understanding of all levels of government which will benefit district four.
Mrs. Hottenstein will be a strong voice who will holistically stand up for the best interest of

Hello, all.
Council, on Tuesday you face a choice which is both easy and difficult -- selecting Kristin's
replacement for the District 4 seat. The choice is easy because you have a whole list of good
candidates, but difficult because you can choose only one person.
I have known two of the candidates for years, and took the time to watch your interview
process (very well done - thank you, Wade!). I believe your best choice is Erin Hottenstein.
She ranks first in relevant experience, and her positions on issues and her ranking of their
relative importance generally agree with my own. But for me the most important thing she
would bring to council is her approach to group decision making. As a member of the
Foothills Unitarian Church I watched her lead our board through two challenging years, and
difficult congregational meetings, with maturity and grace. She is detail oriented and logical,
ready to consider alternatives to her own opinions, and diligent. At risk of sounding conceited,
I venture to say she will serve council as I did, reading all the materials that come to her,
following up with further research, consulting with staff as necessary to complete the story,
and working with all of you to produce the best possible outcome for Fort Collins. I think she
will be outstanding, and I hope you will send a message to the voters in district 4 by giving her
your support.
Thank you for all your good work in this difficult time.

Good Afternoon,
I have worked with Erin through her non-profit organization Colorado 50-50 for about 3 years.
I assisted Erin with research, event planning and hosting throughout the front range. In my
experiences with Erin I have always found her to be very kind, honest, professional,
knowledgeable, empathic, and welcoming. These are qualities I wish more public
officials held as dearly as Erin does.
It gives me great pleasure to endorse Erin Hottenstein for Fort Collins City Council. She has
been working tirelessly to achieve equality in local governments throughout Colorado to make
communities across the state more just for all who live and work in them. I believe her desire

Hello,
As a resident of southwest Fort Collins in District 4 I’m writing to voice my support for Erin Hottenstein to fill the
vacant position on the Council.
I’ve had the chance to interact with Erin and see her at work in various situations over the past several years, and
believe she would be a strong worker on the Council. I see her as an excellent listener to all points of view and think
she would work hard to find consensus solutions that balance various needs. Her strong sense of ethics and her
eagerness to jump in and get things done are qualities we very much need in dealing with the many challenges

I know you have a lot of capable candidates for this position, but I hope you will give serious consideration and

Hello,
My name is Jennifer Powell and is my honor to write to you about Erin Hottenstein and why I
believe she will make a much-needed partner to the current council members and fellow leader
of our community.
I have known Erin for over a decade and have served with Erin both on the board of trustees
for Foothills Unitarian Church, and the group Colorado 50-50. For those of you unfamiliar,
Foothills Unitarian church has over 1100 friends and members and Colorado 50-50 is a
nonpartisan statewide all-volunteer organization that is dedicated to gender parity in allelected offices, and appointed boards and commissions.
Erin is a natural leader, consummate professional, and deeply committed to the work in front
of her. I have seen Erin lead hundreds of people through transitional periods and deeply
challenging situations, all while not shying away from angry oppositions or hard questions.
She powerfully listens and maintains the integrity of the role she holds no matter what. She
knows how to connect with her community by listening and being in the community while
educating herself on the matters most important to them so she can lead with full
understanding and insight.
I know Erin to be a strong and effective communicator as well as a proven partner and team
member through her volunteer work with Colorado 50-50. Erin shows up. Every time. She has
organized and led statewide events with this organization with local and national speakers.
She has given a helping hand and a path to many that otherwise would not have known
what was available to them. Erin is regarded as a leader for women leaders throughout our
state because of the work she has done with Colorado 50-50.
Her background as an instructional trainer as well as a reporter I believe prepared Erin
to know the right questions to ask to get to the crux of the matter. I have witnessed her
do this multiple times with persistence, grace, and ease. She just always knows what to
ask next.
I can't think of a better person right for the role of City Council, and for that matter, for
our city right now.
I appreciate the chance to share my thoughts about Erin and welcome any future
opportunity to do so if needed.
With warm appreciation,
Jennifer Powell

Subject:[EXTERNAL] City Council Recommendation - Erin Hottenstein
Date:Thursday, January 7, 2021 10:06:26 AM
Dear Fort Collins City Council,
I have known Erin Hottenstein since 2017 through her foundation of Colorado 50-50, an organization dedicated to
inspire women of all backgrounds to run for public office. At that time I was a first time candidate, running for US
Congress in the 4th Congressional District. Her organization and network have been very helpful to get women
elected across our state in all levels of public service.
Erin is highly qualified to fill the open position that is now available on the Fort Collins City Council. She has
excellent problem solving skills and importantly, is a critical thinker. She understands the need to obtain all the
information needed, and to listen to all stakeholder voices before moving forward with potential solutions. Her
experience with all levels of government through investigating stories, interviewing individuals and businesses,
studying policies and their effects, has given her a wealth of knowledge to be a valuable member of city council. As
a small business owner, she will bring an important perspective to council discussions. Her passion to address
affordable housing, economic recovery from the pandemic and equity issues across the region demonstrate that she
would take a holistic approach to solving any issue that may come before council.
Erin has excellent communication skills, is a compassionate leader and is ready to bring her life experience to
council. Erin is the kind of person that stands out in a field of candidates. She would be a valuable asset to the Fort
Collins City Council. She is exactly the kind of person that I would want on my city council. I highly recommend
that you select her as your newest city council member. Erin would be a terrific member on your team and I'm sure
you would truly enjoy working with her!
Please feel free to contact me for any follow up. Thank you for your consideration.

I'm writing to enthusiastically recommend Erin Hottenstein for the open City Council seat. I
know Erin mostly through my church, but am also familiar with her work developing

I'm so impressed by how she embraces the idea of being in service to others. We all have ways

service. In addition to her leadership abilities, Erin is also great at collaboration. Working with

Honorable Leaders,
As a 39 year resident of Fort Collins who has marched to prevent Holman Concrete from
burning tires at their plant, who has campaigned City Council to refrain from permitting
Fracking practices in our town limits, and whose continued concern for affordable longterm
housing that has been compromised by the rise of VRBOS and AirBNBs, which I believe
fracture the integrity of our communities, I during this time, extend my utmost support to elect
Erin Hottenstein to our Ft. Collins City Council.
Erin has demonstrated in the years since I’ve known her the importance of self-care, of
family and of advocating for women’s voices in building the community we uphold. When
Covid19 raised its ugly head last March, Erin was instrumental in informing small businesses
of available financial assistance to weather this continued storm.
I believe Erin’s experience as a journalist, collaborator, intent listener who is open minded
and fair, can contribute to the higher purpose she serves. I am grateful she seeks this
opportunity to enhance our Ft. Collins’ agendas that take into account the diversity and vision
of what an integrated community looks like for ourselves and our future generations. She is an
asset we will be proud of.

Greetings,
I have known Erin Hottenstein for 7 years. As a member of Foothills Church, I saw her leadership as President of
the Board of Directors. There were large-scale changes, such as implementing a smooth process for creation of a
governance team focused on transitioning structurally from a medium-sized church to a large-sized church. This was
multi-faceted.
During the multiple church-wide meetings to vote on key aspects in the functioning of the church as an organization,
such as approval of the budget, I was consistently aware and impressed with how organized Erin was. Her ability to
distill down complex information and explain it clearly was effective. Excellent use of media successfully elicited
relevant questions and input from the congregation so the multiple items on the agenda were completed efficiently.
Erin conducted these church-wide meetings with honesty and integrity. If a suggestion was made by a congregant
about how the church may proceed on an issue, she made sure that relevant information was attained before she and
key board members related to that inquiry responded. If more time was needed to compile information, a timeframe
was provided for that. The congregation knew that this was not a board who operated in the dark. Typically, the
board had already considered the solutions that were offered by a congregant. Erin efficiently explained how
information was gathered and why they chose the option they were presenting.
Thank you for eliciting this input. Erin is an excellent candidate for City Council.
Sincerely,

Good afternoon Mayor Troxell and members of the Fort Collins City Council,
I am writing to express my strong support for Erin Hottenstein to fill the Fort Collins City
Council vacancy. I have known Erin since 2019 through my capacity as a volunteer for her
organization Colorado 50-50.
When I first met Erin in 2019, I was inspired by her mission to encourage more women to run
for elected office. I continue to be impressed and inspired by Erin's selfless determination to
inform Coloradans about opportunities and resources to improve our representation. She is
highly professional and maintains a strong sense of nonpartisanship that would allow her to
serve all Fort Collins residents, regardless of their political background. This ability to listen
to, and inspire others is critical in today's world of extreme polarization and disconnection.
Erin is brilliant and hardworking, taking on difficult tasks of research and event planning for
Colorado 50-50 all to inspire others to realize their dreams of running for office. I believe she
would be a strong advocate for the people of Fort Collins, and determined to serve the Council
with integrity, and a team-oriented and mission-driven work ethic.
I am strongly in favor of Erin's candidacy. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Dear Fort Collins City Leaders,
I wanted to take the time to send a note of support for Erin Hottenstein for the vacant position on the City Council. I
live in District 4; in fact, Erin lives in my neighborhood, a short walk away. Erin is very active in making Fort
Collins an even better place to live. She has offered her yard up as a location to sign local petitions or ballot
initiatives during the pandemic, is active in NextDoor and on social media generally, and over many years has
worked to support local organizations doing good work. I have attended a couple of her Colorado 50/50 events and
have been inspired by her dedication to the effort of getting more women and diversity into the body of elected
officials representing We, the People.
I have also experienced the quality of Erin's skillful mediation, communication, public speaking and listening skills
as she served as the Board President for a couple years at Foothills Unitarian Church. There were a couple difficult,
demanding events and transitions happening during her time of service that had to be dealt with very carefully.
While I and many others were counting our blessings <under our breath> that we were not in her leadership position
at that time, we couldn't help but marvel at how well Erin handled the delicate business at hand.
I was especially impressed at how she kept a calm, pleasant demeanor and was always genuinely interested in
understanding how people were feeling and where they were coming from, acknowledging and honoring
individual's feelings. She really wants to help others and improve the life of people in our corner of the world. Her
work in leadership training and development certainly serves her well in listening to people and working to find root
issues, common ground and compromise in order to move forward.
Additionally, I have always found Erin to be motivated, organized, tech-savvy and very, very prepared for her
commitments, deadlines and meetings. Her reliability can not be discounted, as I personally have found it is hard to
find. And at the same time, Erin is grace under pressure... able to laugh when things occasionally, inevitably, don't
exactly go as planned. Erin is a kind, delightful person and would be a great addition to City Council. She has my
vote in April!

I have known Erin for several years through her organization Colorado 50/50 and have

developed networks for women to work through the process of politics and provide

legislative ballot issues and worked on local issues. She continues to be a champion for
community on many level. Erin is someone that truly cares about her community and wants to
improve access to everyone, which I find extremely important during current times. She has a
great ability to bring people together, listen and make decisions. She is easy to work with and
is open to hearing from different points of view.

selfless leader of service, and I cannot think of a stronger, more hard-
working person to fill your vacancy.
Ms. Hottenstein seeks out leadership roles. To name just a few: At her
church, she served three years on the Board of Trustees, one year as
President-Elect, two years as President, and five years on the Stewardship
Committee. Additionally, she served two years on the Compass Advisory
Committee at the Health District of Northern Larimer County and has been
appointed as an election judge for three election cycles. She has
volunteered on more than fifteen local, regional, and statewide campaigns,
and she founded Colorado 50-50, which works to create gender parity in
Colorado for elected officials, boards, and commissions. She also
volunteers at her kids' school and as needed at various community events.
I know Ms. Hottenstein to be a kind, down-to-earth, approachable, and
dependable friend. She will serve on our City Counsel with humility and
competence.
I am happy to expand on any of these points and encourage a phone call
to further discuss Ms. Hottenstein's merits.
Most sincerely,
Shannon Bican Sharrock, Esq.

Hello,
I am writing this email, as a District 4 resident, in strong support of Erin Hottenstein, who is
applying for the City Council vacancy.
I have known Erin in many different capacities for over ten years. Erin is mild mannered and
well-spoken, with an even temperament. She is kind, trustworthy, intelligent and someone
who cares deeply about her community and fellow community members and making our
community a better place for everyone.
I have also known Erin to be driven in her ambitions and missions, and is not above getting
her hands dirty, working with her neighbors, side-by-side, to achieve goals. She is a good
listener, creative problem solver and is someone who I know will work hard for Fort Collins
and the residents of District 4. I am so glad to know Erin, and I wholeheartedly endorse her in
her quest to serve District 4 on the Fort Collins City Council.
Thank you.

To Whom It May Concern,
This is a letter of support for Erin Hottenstein for City Council. Hottenstein is a leader and
role model for numerous women such as myself. She is the founder of Colorado 50-50 which
is a non-profit dedicated to encouraging more women to run. I met her through the Colorado
50-50 Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) committee. The fact that she cares about
the underrepresented group AAPI in a politically elected position speaks volume about her
character.
The character that she is open minded and willing to learn patiently. The character that is
dedicated to her own community. And lastly, she is a leader that leads.

RE: Letter of support for Erin Hottenstein for City Council
To Fort Collins City Council Members:
Thank you for allowing public comment for my endorsement of Erin Hottenstein
for the vacant position on the Fort Collins City Council. My name is Milt Tokunaga
currently a resident of Larimer County and Windsor, Colorado. I endorse Erin
Hottenstein for Council, because I believe she will be a valuable contributor and
asset to the board. I became acquainted with Erin via the Water Literate Leaders
class. A select few applicants are invited to participate as their involvement can
lead to their roles which can impact regional water policy. The selection to this
class is indicative of Erin’s outreach, leadership ability, commitment to the
community and her continued effort to be well informed. She was always
prepared to discuss intelligently the assigned topics, and participated in group
discussions with in depth questions. When Erin spoke, she was straight forward
and impartial and willing to discuss other points of view, even though she may
have disagreed. She understood impacts of certain decisions and what the
consequences are as well as maybe some of the unintended consequences.
Outside the presentation portion of the class, she engaged in conversations with
other participants regarding topics not necessarily related to water, to
understand and make a connection with them on a personal level and you were
aware she was an active listener.
The Board will have many qualified applicants and Erin being one of them as
detailed on her resume. The work experiences and educational accomplishments
only define one aspect of Erin. What it does not present is her character and
what I have experienced and learned from class is a person of high character.
Currently, I am a member of the Windsor Water and Sewer Board, have been a
Town Board member and Mayor of Milliken as well as a former Board member of
Upstate Colorado. I understand the value of having effective Board members.
They are not the ones that will always agree with you, but are the ones who:

• Understand the issues by always learning and follows the relevant
information
• Listen and participate
• How decisions can impact not only the most obvious, but anticipate the
potential consequences of their decisions
• Have a sense of teamwork and cooperation
• Dedicated and committed
• Straight forward, impartial, flexible, valuing others opinions
• Value discretion and confidentiality
• Understand that when the Town Council makes a decision, it is a Board
decision, not the decisions of others even if you disagree with the outcome.
• One of high character and integrity
These are the reasons I endorse Erin Hottenstein for the Town Council of Fort
Collins.

Esteemed Councilmembers,
My name is Loren Collins, and I have lived my whole life in District 4. Veronica Olivas is my
mother. Nonetheless, I believe because she raised me and is largely responsible for the person
I've become, I think that gives me an invaluable perspective of who she is, and what the
council would gain by selecting her.
She has embodied public service her whole life, and has always placed herself before others.
She has been a police officer, safety director, volunteer, and child advocate. Most of all, she
taught me to always remember those less fortunate than oneself. She has led through integrity,
equity, and commitment to the service of others. I think her perspective would be
invaluable for the council to share. Thank you for your time.
Respectfully,

Please select Veronica Olivas to fill the vacancy. I believe that selecting one of the candidates

My name is Nicole Reed and I have had the honor of working for Veronica for the past 12
years. During our time together she has been a mentor and provided much wisdom on a
variety of life topics. I come to speak tonight to attest to Veronica’s ability and passion to
successfully fill the District 4 Council Member vacancy. Veronica has spent her life in the
service of others. She led her career in law enforcement based on her sound ethics and
morality until moving into a safety coordinator position where she became a voice for the
people. Veronica has repeatedly advocated for staff and never lost the pursuit of what was
right even when faced with negative repercussions from speaking up. Such selfless service
will provide the residents of District 4 with a world class representative. Veronica’s legacy
of service was also passed onto her son who even after receiving his undergrad and serving at
our Capital, he went on to serve our Country. Veronica’s legacy is that of passion,
perseverance, dedication, integrity, and honesty. All qualities that will make her a valued
member of the council. Veronica is more than motivated to serve the public interests and
participate in civic engagement for the betterment of her district and this city. Veronica has
spent her life in this city and has watched it grow. This perspective is invaluable when
considering all the issues facing our beloved Fort Collins. Progress and growth are critical and
inevitable, but it must be balanced with a respect to the history and roots from which this city
has grown. In her position as safety coordinator at CSU, her knowledge of emergency
management has helped to spearhead response efforts to COVID-19. Veronica’s ability to
research and navigate politics has made her an enormous asset at CSU. Without doubt, if
Veronica were to serve on the council she would bring a unique set of skills and knowledge to
effectively advocate for the people and this city and successfully move the City of Fort Collins
towards its vision.

Subject:[EXTERNAL] Support for Council Candidate Shirley Peel District 4
Date:Tuesday, January 12, 2021 11:20:19 AM
Hello City Council Members,
I wanted to write to express my sincere support for Shirley Peel to be the next District 4 City
Council Representative. I have known Ms Peel for over 15 years in multiple capacities here in
Fort Collins. I have served alongside her and her husband as faithful parishioners of a local
church, where I have seen her work countless volunteer hours serving children and families.
Her desire for strong families is also echoed in the several speaking engagements she has
volunteered for as well as leading countless small group studies for collegians, young married
couples, and women's ministries.
I have also worked closely with Ms. Peel in a business capacity. She and her husband started a
small private school in Fort Collins where I have been employed as the Finance Director for
the past seven years. In her role as School Administrator I have witnessed her give strength,
leadership, and faithfulness through challenging times. She is a dedicated, task oriented
achiever who strives for excellence in all she does. Under her leadership she took the school
from a size of 10 to over 80 students in a matter of a few years. She successfully ran
fundraising campaigns to keep the cost of tuition low for families. Today Christian Core
Academy Fort Collins is thriving due largely to her commitment to stellar education. She not
only is committed to having private school options in our community, but also spent several
years volunteering in Fort Collins own public schools as her children attended classes.
Not only has she been an educator for over 20 years, she has raised four children in Fort
Collins who she raised to be lifetime community contributors. I remember after Hurricane
Katrina, she took her youngest son on a trip to New Orleans to volunteer with the clean-up
efforts of that community to teach him the importance of helping those in need. This is just
one example of many times she has given of herself when she didn't have to, but felt a call to
serve.
Shirley Peel would be an excellent Council member. She would build relationships that stem
from harmony and make sound collaborative decisions based on real data affecting our
community.
Thank you for your time in considering Shirley Peel for District 4.
Sincerely,
Angie Tinker

To Whom It May Concern,
I would like to express my desire for Shirley Peel to be elected as one of our next
City Council members. I have known Shirley personally for more than ten years,
and I have seen first hand many examples of things that would make her an
excellent fit for this role. I have primarily benefited from her leadership as a member
of the thriving school she helped start here in Fort Collins (Christian Core
Academy).
In addition to the vision, perseverance, patience, and education needed to start a
school from the ground up, I know that Shirley has been an active member of the
community for more than 20 years, she’s raised 4 wonderful children who have
gone on to serve their own communities, she’s been an educator herself for 20
years, and she serves on the Larimer County Citizens’ Review Board.
Shirley is a proficient communicator, she’s great at being a bridge builder between
people, and she’s knowledgeable about the issues currently facing the city of Fort

I sincerely think Shirley Peel is the best fit for this vacancy, and I hope that you will
allow her to join you on the city council.

Dear Counsel Members,
I am writing in reference to the vacant chair in District 4. We are living through uncertain times and need a leader
who can bring unity and whose life experiences equips them to serve our community best.
Today I would like to recommend Shirley Peel. My family moved to Fort Collins 8 years ago. We were looking for
a school for my son who was going to be entering second grade that fall. We have very high standard and wanted to
find a school where our son would grow in knowledge and wisdom. We heard about Shirley Peel and the school that
she started in Fort Collins that followed Core Knowledge Curriculum. He attended the school through 8th grade and
is now in High School.
Throughout the last eight years, we have grown a relationship with her. She is just who our city needs. She has a
heart for Fort Collins and every person, regardless of who they are. She cares deeply and has the experience to serve
in excellence.
Here are a few of her many assets:
*She has been an active member of the community for over 20 years.
*She has volunteered in area schools
*She was an educator for 20+years.
*Serves on Larimer County Citizens’ Review Board
*Mentors CSU students
Shirley is an excellent communicator, problem solver, and an unbiased leader. She is a bridge builder and team
player. She has served on committees/boards with people from diverse backgrounds. She founded a Preschool for
under served children on the Mexico border. She also started a Pre-K - 8th grade school in Fort Collins where she
has served as a teacher, administrator, and board member.
One of the greatest and most important thing about Shirley Peel, is that she is knowledgeable about the current
issues that are facing Fort Collins. Her passion to see Fort Collins strengthened in the areas of diversity, equity, and
inclusion is what makes her the clear choice for the appointment of the vacancy seat in District 4.
Thank you,

Dear Fort Collins City Council and Mayor Troxell,
I strongly endorse Melanie Potyondy to fill the District 4 vacancy Fort Collins City
Council.
As a Director of the Poudre District School Board, proponent of Amendment 73, and
campaign manager for the 4A Mill Levy Override campaign, I have had the pleasure of
working closely with Melanie on numerous occasions. I have seen, firsthand, her
leadership skills and dedication to making her community a better place. Her ability to
effectively communicate and rally support within the Poudre Education Association
really drove our success for a significant 4A Mill Levy Override campaign win in 2019.
Once the campaign for 4A was completed, Melanie spearheaded conversations within
the district about ways to spend our new money in the social and emotional arena. Her
ideas were valuable in considering ways to reach out and gather input from the district’s
school psychologists, social workers, mental health professionals, and counselors,
ensuring that all parties’ perspectives were considered in decision-making. She also
provided great input on how to best meet the needs of struggling students, based on her
direct experience with young people and their families in her work. Her willingness to
share and collaborate with the Board of Education has been extremely appreciated.
Overall, my experiences with Melanie have consistently pointed to strong judgment and
work ethic, as well as good communication skills. Additionally, she has had the
opportunity to work with many District 4 students and families in her work with the
school district, which I believe can give her more insight and ability to understand our
community’s needs. I encourage you to consider her for the open Council position and
appreciate your time in reviewing this letter.

Mayor Troxell and members of City Council,
I support Melanie Potyondy, who is applying for the vacant City Council seat in District 4. I have
had the pleasure of getting to know Melanie both through her participation in community
events and through pairing with her on a bill I ran at the state capitol during the 2018-2019
session. She has the knowledge, professional skills, and interpersonal strengths she needs to be
an excellent representative of our community.
In the fall of 2018 Melanie contacted me with a viable idea for a bill based on inequities she
recognized in her job at Rocky Mountain High School as a school psychologist. I filed the bill
based on her idea. As this bill moved through the legislative process, Melanie was active every
step of the way, recruiting colleagues to lobby in its favor, testifying effectively in both Senate
and House education committees, and visiting the capitol as the bill crossed Governor Polis’
desk. Throughout the creation of this bill, Melanie proved herself to be insightful, responsible,
well-spoken, and committed to making positive change for her professional group. Further, it
was clear that she was eager to learn about the process of law making and governance.
Outside of our work together for this bill, I have gotten to know Melanie through her community
advocacy over the years and her active engagement in local issues and education. It’s clear
that Melanie has the skills it takes to connect with community leaders and constituents alike. Her
background in public education as a school psychologist makes her well-suited to exploring all
angles of issues; she is steeped in effectively connecting with a variety of stakeholders,
considering a systems perspective, and making data-based decisions. She was a key player in
the passage of Poudre School District’s recent Mill Levy Override to increase public education
funding and she continually seeks out opportunities to strengthen her community, be it on a
large scale like a campaign or a small one, like neighborhood improvement actions. She is an
active and positive change agent. I think Melanie would represent her constituents well on City
Council.

To Whom It May Concern:
It is my pleasure to give Melanie Potyondy, Ph.D. my highest recommendation for selection
for a seat on the Fort Collins City Council. Melanie has been a strong member of the
Integrated Services Department in Poudre School District serving Rocky Mountain High
School as their lead school psychologist. She has proven to be an outstanding professional
who is organized, energetic, compassionate and passionate, knowledgeable, and always
striving for excellence.
Melanie is forward thinking and works to assure that she understands topics that are being
addressed. She has been key in identifying areas of need in the school district and
advocating for advancement of these areas. An example of her advocacy and support is
the recent passing of the 2019 Mill Levy Override - 4A to assist Poudre School District to
address mental health needs of students as well as adjust teacher salaries in the District
to be competitive. When making decisions or prior to advocating for particular topics,
Melanie takes the time to understand the topic, ask questions, and examine data and
information in an effort to make a good decision. Personally, I find Melanie extremely
approachable, open minded, reasonable, honest and engaging. She approaches her role as
a school psychologist for one of our largest District high schools seriously and with great
passion. I have no doubt that she would do the same for the City of Fort Collins on the City
Council.
In addition to Melanie’s service to students in Poudre School District, she is an avid
supporter of her community and is an active community member who loves Fort Collins.
She engages through service to this community desiring to positively impact those who live
in Fort Collins. Melanie has my highest recommendation for a seat on the City Council. I
have no doubt that she would immediately make a difference for those whom she would
represent.

Dear Mayor Troxell and City Councilmembers,
I am writing to you to express my support for Melanie Potyondy’s bid for the City Council vacancy in
District 4. I have worked with Melanie in a number of political and other community events over the
years and have found her to be sincere, committed, and in possession of solid judgment. I believe she
would be a hardworking and effective addition to the Council.
In all my interactions with Melanie, it has been clear that she is genuine and that she is seeking public
office for the right reasons. She attends public and private events with a genuine intention to connect with
others and to better understand issues impacting Fort Collins. I believe this level of engagement and
willingness to learn will serve her well as a member of City Council.
Her interpersonal skills are excellent, Melanie is a clear, capable, and approachable communicator. Her
work as a mental health professional in public education has served her well, as it is clear that she is able
to connect with a variety of audiences. She also demonstrates strong listening skills that will enhance her
ability to building awareness of issues in District 4.
Melanie has the ability to see issues from different angles and to consider a variety of perspectives upon
which to base her opinions. As seen clearly from her resume, she has actively sought a variety of
engagement and advocacy activities at the school district, local, and state level. She has been a City board
member and took City Works 101, has served on several mental-health related committees, and has
intimate knowledge of public education. She also worked with Representative Jeni Arndt on a state-level

bill that she suggested as a citizen. Through these activities, she has gained a balanced, yet informed,
perspective that allows her to be effective on Council.
I recommend Melanie Potyondy for the Fort Collins City Council. She brings a fresh, unique perspective,
a willingness to grow and learn, and many of the requisite skills needed to be successful in such a role. I

Fort Collins, CO 80521
Dear Mayor Troxell and Fort Collins City Council members,
My name is Kristen Draper and I am a Director on the Poudre School District Board of Education. It
is my pleasure to endorse Melanie Potyondy for Fort Collins City Council. Melanie has presented to
the Board on many occasions factual, data-based information along with empathetic and caring
consideration of those the data represents.
Melanie will work tirelessly for community livability in Fort Collins, from affordability of working and
living (with experience, as many teachers are finding hard to live where they work), to climate, to
social and inclusive sustainability in and around Fort Collins.
She has proven herself with her work in PSD and as the Poudre Education Association’s “Political
Activist of the Year” in 2019. It is my pleasure to recommend Melanie Potyondy to fill the City
Council seat vacated by Kristin Stephens.
Thank You,
Kristen Draper

I'm writing in support of my friend and colleague Melanie Potyondy. I am a PSD teacher,
current President of the Poudre River Public Library Board of Trustees, and a District 4
resident. I have worked with Melanie for several years at Rocky Mountain High School, and
we sponsored the ukulele club together (she is an excellent player!). Two reasons stand out in
my mind for why Melanie would make the best candidate for this opening - she is incredibly
smart and she really cares. Melanie decided a few years ago to get involved in the political
arena in a big way, by supporting causes she cares about with her time, her advocacy and her
presence. She was all in, and our PSD teachers association and local community are the better
for her involvement. She is an excellent communicator and advocate for the students she
works with. She finds time to lift up others around her with personal notes recognizing their
action or achievement. I know that on city council Melanie would spend the time she needs to
understand issues and to meet with and hear constituents' concerns. As a member of a Board, I
would look for someone like Melanie to fill a board opening. She is fun and pleasant to work
with. She holds opinions based on research and experience, she cares about people, and she is
not a divisive or argumentative person. I urge you to select Melanie for this opening.

Dr. Melanie Potyondy is an amazing person. She would make a great addition to the FC City
Council. I have known Dr. P for almost ten years now and she can do anything that she sets
her mind to. She is a terrific psychologist, at Rocky Mountain High School, where I also work.
She's an amazing mother to two boys. She has completed the Fort Collins boot camp course
and pays attention to all of the issues that affect Fort Collins' citizens. The City Council would
be lucky to have her! She will make the tough decisions necessary to keep Fort Collins the
amazing city that it is!

As a former resident of Fort Collins, I believe Melanie to be the right person to fill this seat.
Melanie is a dedicated public servant, giving up her nights and weekends to getting out the
vote, learning more about city government, and participating on committees. She values public
services, enrolling her children in summer programs at the cultural center. She is an educator
who has brought her concerns all the way to the state capital as she strives to enact real
change. She is tireless and will work to be a voice of reason and care for her constituents. I
hope you will add her to the council - you won’t regret it!!

I am a colleague of Melany Potyondy and have nothing but positive things to say about her.
For sake of time, I can sum it up to this: Melany Potyondy has a grace to how she approaches
everything in life. She is firm in what she believes and what she wants to accomplish, yet has a
kindness this state and country desperately needs. Her expertise as a school psychologist gives
her a unique perspective into the lives of so many of our community members and she instills
hope in everyone she comes in contact with. She would be a remarkable member to City
Council. With her mission being an agent of change, she will continue to dedicate her life to
her community.

I had the pleasure of being Dr. Potyondy’s colleague a few years ago, and have been
fortunate enough to maintain a relationship even after our career paths diverged. Dr.
Potyondy’s passion for her work and serving others is unparalleled, and I have always
admired so many of her characteristics both as a professional and a friend. Dr. Potyondy goes
above and beyond to serve others, and support the growth and development of systems she has
been a part of. She is able to see things on a macro level, and understand how systems and
policies impact communities and individuals. She is creative, and full of ideas for how to
make these systems work to their best potential, and support the maximum amount of groups
and individuals possible. She is a fierce advocate, and fights both on a micro and macro level
to ensure that nobody is left without something they are entitled to. She has already had a hand
in affecting positive change in public policy as a citizen, and I have no doubt she would do
amazing things as a public servant for Fort Collins. Dr. Potyondy is genuine and authentic, and
there is no doubt that she wants to take public office for no other reason than to be able to
serve her community. Dr. Potyondy is kind, compassionate, driven, wise, and charismatic and
would would quickly become a beloved leader of her community if given the opportunity. If I
lived in Fort Collins, I would cast my vote for her in a heartbeat!

Hello, my name is Laura Druse, long time resident of District 4. I have had the distinct
pleasure of working with Dr. Potyondy for six years at Rocky Mountain High School and
three years on PEA. Melanie is an inspiration to all of those she comes into contact with due to
her CAN DO attitude and tireless efforts. She is an advocate for teachers and students alike,
and always has a moment to listen. Her astute observations of what is going on around her and
ways to improve life for all is exceptional. She goes out of her way to recognize people with
her “Drops for your Bucket†inspirational handwritten notes that let people know she
sees them and appreciates them. I have personally received several of these and believe me,
they have helped me regain joy and passion in my teaching when I needed it. Melanie exhibits
sound judgment, values diversity and equity for all, and approaches challenges with a cool
head and empathy. It is for these reasons I am proud to call Melanie my friend, my colleague
and soon, my District 4 Fort Collins City Council Representative. She will work hard to make
Fort Collins even better than it currently is… Thank you.

I support Melanie Potyondy, a working parent and long-term public school employee, who has
several skills and experiences that would be of benefit to the Council. Her long experience as a
school psychologist guarantees that she is a good listener, and her public employment means
that she is well-acquainted with a diverse population of citizens. Her doctoral minor in
statistics is a major plus, as is her experience as a member of the Ft. Collins Women's
Commission. I do not know Dr. Potyondy personally, but my phone conversations with her
assure me that she is committed to increasing affordable, achievable housing opportunities for
all in Ft. Collins, an issue that is supremely important to me. (I am a long-term volunteer with
Homeward Alliance.) Ft. Collins is fast becoming a "have" vs. "have not" community, and I
believe her skills and experience would help us alleviate that problem.

I was a School Psychologist and worked with Melanie Potyondy prior to my retirement from
the Poudre School District in June of 2020. I have always been impressed with her insights in
issues pertaining to education and psychology and also her willingness to go above and
beyond to tackle political and legislative issues. I believe that Melanie would be an asset to the
Fort Collins City Council and would bring a well-needed perspective based upon her work and
advocacy for children in the schools as wells as for the populace of Fort Collins.

well as a mental health provider in our community. It takes a person of passion and

Hello,
I would like to voice my support for Melanie Potyondy for city council.
We've been neighbors for over 5 years and in that time, I've found her
to be friendly, supportive, helpful and an all-around good neighbor.
She takes on tasks for the whole neighborhood, things that no one
else wants to do but everyone wants done. She was doing that long
before her city council interest, because that's just how she is. She's
hard working, very smart, wants the best for Fort Collins, and is willing to
spend her time and energy to help everyone. She would do an excellent
job as a city representative.
Thank you,

RE: Letter of Support for Melanie Potyondy
Dear City Council Members,
I write to express my enthusiastic support for Melanie Potyondy as a member of the Fort Collins
City Council.
I’ve known Melanie since 2015. She is been my neighbor and friend. Our children are the same
ages and the best of friends. I have seen Melanie evolve from a concerned citizen to an agent of
change during this time.
Melanie is a community focused and driven individual. Her actions directly benefit our
community in many ways. Melanie crowd sourced and spearheaded fixing the Quail H ollow
neighborhood sign. I have lived in Quail Hollow since 2015, and until Melanie took charge, the
sign was derelict and falling apart. Melanie coordinated community input (using polls and
surveys on NextDoor) with the designs and craftmanship of Rocky Mountain High School
students to create a new sign. It should be noted that the Rocky students were participating
through a vocational program for students with disabilities. Melanie took the extra step of
painting and finishing the sign in such a way that it will last for many years. Quail Hollow is a
better place because of Melanie’s attentions.
Melanie built a little free library in Quail Hollow. This little free library has become a hub of
book exchange that was very much needed during the pandemic. Neighbors stop frequently to
exchange books in a COVID-safe manner. Melanie routinely picks up garbage around the Spring
Canyon and Cottonwood Glen parks. She even fishes garbage out of the Spring Creek. Clearly
Melanie is conscientious and community minded. She makes Quail Hollow a better place to live
and recreate. I know she will do the same for the city of Fort Collins.
Melanie positively impacts many people. She petitioned for changes to the laws that prohibit
school psychologists from being reimbursed for supplies similar to that of teachers. Because of
her actions, school psychologists no longer have to pay out of pocket for essential materials to
perform their jobs-this bill was passed at the state level and has positively impacted many
school psychologists. She also participates in Red for Ed events-she canvassed more homes
than anyone else to increase funding for Poudre School District. She encourages civic
engagement by her involvement in get out the vote events-this includes facilitating question
and answer sessions about ballot issues, calling to remind folks to vote, and answering
questions about the voting process. Melanie has given several presentations for audiences
ranging from higher school to graduate school about the importance of civic engagement and
maintaining dialogue with local legislators. Clearly Melanie is passionate about civic
engagement and lives out her values.
DocuSign Envelope ID: 9493561D-3C49-41BE-9195-5830825E71E3
Melanie is a passionate advocate for teachers and students. Melanie organized a ‘honk-a-thon’
for Black Lives Matter. She has participated in several Black Lives Matter events, including the
Bike Ride for Black Lives. I know she researches social justice issues carefully, and only acts
upon deliberate consideration in the causes she endorses.
Melanie is smart, professional, and dedicated to her community. She carefully considers and
researches issues large and small. She is everything a council person should be. I heartily
endorse and support Melanie for the District 4 position. Her clear and conscientious decision
making will benefit me and my community.
Sincerely,

Dear Mayor Troxell and members of Fort Collins City Council :
Dr. Melanie Potyondy will be an excellent appointment for the vacancy in District 4. I have worked
with Melanie for several years in my past capacity as President of Poudre Education Association.
Melanie held several positions of r esponsibility within the teachers’ union. She serves as
representative for her building, Rocky Mountain High School , where she is currently the school
psychologist. She also serve s on PEA’s Negotiations Team.
I became very familiar with her leadership qualities while working on the successful #4A PSD
funding initiative during the 2019 campaign. Besides her intelligence and work ethic, I was struck
by her ability to communicate with citizens. The campaign canvassed at football games at French
Field. I was impressed with her ability to converse with any voter with empathy and persuasiveness.
She not only understands people, but she has a firm grasp on any p ublic policy issue before her. As a
member of the PEA Negotiations Team, I have seen her lead in highly charged political discussions.
She understands the delicate tightrope walk needed to come to sound decisions on critical issues.
I believe Melanie ha s a bright future in elected political office. The citizens of District 4 and the rest
of Fort Collins deserve a representative from a new generation of leadership. The youthful energy
she brings, along with her progressive values, will make her a valued addition to the City Council. I
hope you will see your way clear to appoint Melanie Potyondy to the District 4 vacancy.

To Mayor Troxell and the Fort Collins City Council:
It is with great pleasure I write this letter to recommend Melanie Potyondy, Ph.D. for
councilperson on the Fort Collins City Council. Melanie and I worked together in the St. Vrain
Valley School District early in both of our careers as school psychologists, where she impressed
me with her wisdom and insight in our provider group meetings. We reconnected in 2019 when
she reached out to me when I was Collaborative Relations Chair for the Colorado Society of
School Psychologists (CSSP), to support a bill she had initiated to gain a salary stipend for
school psychologists who maintain the highest standards of professional credentialing in our
field. After the bill was signed into law by Governor Polis, I quickly recruited Melanie to join the
ranks of CSSP as the Northern Regional Representative, as it was clear to me she would be an
asset to our professional organization.
As a board member for CSSP, Melanie has raised the bar for our Regional Representatives.
She organizes local events to share resources with school psychologists in Northern Colorado,
and built a communication channel for the interests of members in her area to the board. As part
of the Executive Council, she has contributed thoughtfully to our decision making process,
especially as our board has faced unprecedented and complex issues this year. Covid-19 not
only upset many of our board’s procedures but has dramatically impacted the priorities of school
psychologists across the state. Our organization has worked tirelessly to provide support and
advocacy for school psychologists and their students and Melanie has contributed importantly to
our efforts.
In Melanie’s work on the board of CSSP, I have witnessed her leadership through respectful
collaboration. She communicates with excellent clarity, simultaneously maintaining tact and a
warm sense of humor. Melanie brings an open mind and effective listening skills to meetings,
and displays strong judgement, guided by compassion and ethics. Melanie applies logic, a
well-developed capacity for data analysis, along with creativity, to solving problems and she is
efficient in her execution of action items. I can think of no better combination of skills to be a
constructive City Council member.
Melanie Potyondy’s strong commitment to her Fort Collins community, coupled with her
outstanding background, have prepared her well for appointment to the City Council. Thank you
for your consideration and I wish you all a happy and prosperous 2021.

To Whom It May Concern:
Subject: Recommendation for Dr. Melanie Potyondy
Re: City Council
As a union leader, colleague, and personal friend of Dr. Melanie Potyondy, I am thoroughly honored to
write a letter of recommendation for her consideration to appointment for Fort Collins City Council. I
cannot think of another colleague so dedicated to our community, our Association, our students, and our
civic institutions. Dr. Potyondy is a consummate professional, helping our most vulnerable students at
Rocky Mountain High School. Dr. Potyondy & I sat in many a meeting with parents and students to make
sure our Integrated Services students received the highest quality education in the most appropriate
setting. Throughout the past five years, Melanie has become an integral part of our education program and
advocate for our Integrated Services students at the district and state level.
As an Association Representative, Melanie never fails to deliver above and beyond for her fellow
educators. Melanie’s persona naturally secures a bond of trust that allows her to really broker and
mediate hard conversations between administration and her peers. Melanie always has an ear to lend,
sage advice to give, or just a warm smile and a free moment to offer staff and students a safe and
comfortable place. I think it is her understanding, combined with a true authenticity, that creates such a
welcoming professional environment for a large cross-section of educators like you would expect at a
comprehensive high school.
Melanie is the quintessential dedicated political activist for the Poudre Education Association, she was
awarded our activist of the year award last year. Her list of campaigns and dedicated canvassing is
extensive. Dr. Potyondy was a driving force on several recent education initiatives like Amendment 271,
Amendment 73 and our highly successful 4A Mill Levy Override just this past year. Melanie is truly a
“team player” really establishing a standard for political activism and legislative lobbying. I have worked
side by side with Dr. Potyondy on some tough campaigns knowing our effort would benefit children
throughout our district. Most impressively, Melanie is undaunting in her quest to constantly update her
own union commitment and drives her colleagues to do the same. As a state level Ambassador Fellow,
Melanie is honing her leadership qualities for public service. Melanie is a natural leader among her
colleagues able to truly master that delicate balance of leading her peers without pretense or pageant.
It has been a pleasure to work with Melanie as an educator and union leader. I am confident that Melanie
has the necessary strengths, traits, and talents to become a major influence in our city through City
Council. In short, without hesitation I highly recommend Melanie Potyondy. Please feel free to contact
me with any questions or further examples of Dr. Potyondy’s abilities. I am honored to offer any
additional input you may need for Melanie’s further consideration.

Dear Mayor Troxell, Mayor Pro Tem, and City Council Members,
Thank you for this opportunity to write a letter on behalf of Melanie Potyondy, who is seeking
to fill the vacancy for the Fort Collins City Council seat in District 4.
I have known Melanie for several years, first becoming acquainted with her through my
advocacy work on the Larimer County Mental Health Initiative. I served on the lead team for
this initiative in 2018, giving over 60 presentations throughout the county to help educate the
community on the need for increased resources. Melanie was part of a group that organized
activities to advocate and raise awareness for this important initiative, including speaking at
a public meeting about her experiences as a school mental health professional and how
expanded county service options would better meet the needs of her students.
Thereafter, I watched with great respect as Melanie brought an innovative idea to a local
state legislator and helped bring that bill to fruition, from inception to committee hearings to
passage into law. This bill had a positive impact for school mental health professionals across
Colorado.
Throughout the time I have known her, I have observed Melanie at multiple events being of
service to her community. In these instances, participants have benefited from her ability to
network, raise awareness, organize, and invite diverse parties to the table. For instance, this
past summer, I attended a “driveway” campaign event in Melanie’s neighborhood that
cemented my impression of her. Dozens of neighbors came by to join our discussion, many
of whom told me they came because they knew that, if Melanie was involved, the
conversations must be important because they held her in such high regard. They stated she
was their “go-to” person: knowledgeable, helpful, and willing to share resources that would
benefit her neighbors.
I agree with this feedback, in that I have found Melanie to be an insightful, inquisitive,
community-minded leader who I am confident will be a thoughtful, engaged City Council
member. Further, Melanie is personable, collaborative, organized, and a great listener.
In short, Melanie Potyondy would be a great addition to Fort Collins City Council. Please do
not hesitate to contact me with any further questions.
Sincerely,
Jody Shadduck-McNally

To whom it may concern:
Simply put, Melanie Potyondy epitomizes the very best of today’s educational leaders. Intelligent,
insightful, and motivated, Melanie possesses all of the essential qualities of an inspiring leader;
good judgment, an ability to collaborate, a strong work ethic, and an investment in her
community. Because of these qualities, it is my pleasure to write a letter of recommendation for
Melanie to represent her constituents as a City of Fort Collins City Council Member.
I have been fortunate to know Melanie professionally for five years. My first introduction to
Melanie was as her Assistant Director for students with disabilities at Rocky Mountain High
School. Through our consistent interactions, Melanie demonstrated a multitude of skills for
effective leadership. When you work closely with Melanie, what you see is not just a School
Psychologist who is effective with her duties, but a leader who is able to get others to follow. She
is never embroiled with the weeds of a problem. Instead, she has the ability and tenacity to help
others navigate their way toward a solution, usually by collaborating with a variety of professionals
or referring to a reference book. Whatever situation may present itself; Melanie has the leadership
skills to collaborate with others and determine a path that will enable all involved to find a solution
and move forward in a more efficient manner. What results is a variety of professionals willing
to take risks, willing to ask questions, and willing to teach and learn from one another for the
mutual interest of all involved.
In addition to her ability to be an effective collaborator and problem solver, Melanie is truly a
reflective practitioner who continually uses new experiences to revise her practices. In working
through a variety of situations with Melanie, it is evident that she approaches each situation with a
fresh frame of mind, enabling decisions and practices to be based on recent data, as well as the
approach needed for each personality. She constantly looks for ways to improve her practices by
making them unique to each situation, while still using her strong work ethic, vast knowledge,
and critical thinking skills. To ensure she is consistently collaborating in an effective manner for
the benefit of a variety of individuals, Melanie is open to feedback that will allow other
perspectives to help guide decision making. She consistently spends time reflecting on practices
and situations with colleagues. It’s this collaborative nature and work ethic that has encouraged
the development of a true professional learning community in the Integrated Services department
at Rocky Mountain High School and with Melanie’s leadership; they have broken down the doors
of isolationism and created an authentic collaborative culture. Melanie has been incredibly
influential in the gains made to work collaboratively as a school and department, enabling students
to be successful, while promoting ethical and effective practices.

As a leader who is constantly willing to change direction and approach, Melanie is a true risk taker
who can adapt to new experiences while still maintaining great judgement skills. A perfect
example of this is Melanie’s willingness to take on difficult tasks and provide effective problem-
solving skills to impact systems change in a positive manner. In this role, Melanie is a torchbearer
for positive change and is always willing to advocate for others to ensure forward movement. Over
the past five years, Melanie had to create a culture among departments that embraced change and
welcomed self-reflection. Melanie’s ability to do that is astounding. Her colleagues find her
approachable and down to earth. She is very rational in her thinking and has data to support her
decision-making. Through her exhaustive work ethic and moral judgment, Melanie models what
today’s research is continually stressing, that effective collaboration pays off richly in the form of
higher quality solutions. It is this ability to adapt and lead that makes Melanie an excellent
candidate for the City Council Member position.
I have been fortunate to work alongside Melanie for five years and observe her amazing knowledge
and leadership skills. Melanie is one of the most passionate and committed professionals in Poudre
School District. Poudre School District is committed to meeting the needs of all students, working
collaboratively with differing viewpoints, and fostering a positive climate. Melanie’s skills set when
it comes to organization, work ethic, great judgement, ethical standards, ability to collaborate, and her
servant leadership, enables the process of meeting those goals to take place in an efficient and effective
manner, while maintaining relationships with a variety of professionals, students, and community
members. Melanie truly has the interpersonal skills, self-discipline, initiative, and passion needed
to inspire change and growth. I can say without reservation that Melanie will be an asset to the
City of Fort Collins as a City Council Member. If you have any further question, please feel free
to contact me at (970) 490-3223.

To Whom it May Concern:
I am pleased to write a letter of support for Melanie Potyondy as she pursues the District 4 City
Council vacancy. I have had the pleasure of knowing Melanie since 2018 when she was appointed to
the City of Fort Collins Women’s Commission, which we have served on together since that time.
Melanie demonstrates a dedication to diversity and inclusion, is measured and accessible, and
embodies the City’s common values of collaboration, excellence, integrity, and stewardship.
Through her professional role as a school psychologist, and as a strong advocate for the well-being
of families, Melanie has gained a unique understanding of the complex social and economic
hardships that many residents face in Fort Collins. She can articulate how factors like supporting
small and minority owned businesses, providing safe and affordable housing options, and allocating
resources equitably helps everyone in our community thrive. Melanie asks questions, listens to
every voice in the room, and always brings a perspective that enhances a conversation, especially
when it comes to working together to find solutions to a problem.
Melanie has been involved with Fort Collins Women’s Commission projects including the facilitation
of expert educational panels on the topics of homelessness, safety and health, affordable housing,
and data assessment around issues facing women in Fort Collins. She is a well-respected member of
the group and stands out as a strong leader.
The person selected to fill the Council vacancy must be up to the challenge, especially at a time
when many local businesses and families are feeling the weight of a difficult 2020. Melanie’s desire
to take on the task shows how steadfast she is in her dedication to the Fort Collins community.
Respectfully yours,
