EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

BACKGROUND / DISCUSSION
This project will result in the preparation of a historic context on the life and work of significant local architect
William B. “Bill” Robb. A native Coloradan, Robb came to Fort Collins as a graduate of the prestigious
Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s School of Architecture. He established his firm in 1953 and along with
his partners, created a large body of work in Fort Collins. Robb’s best-known work was in designing schools,
churches and commercial buildings, often using architectural styles popular during the Modern Movement in the
1950s - 1970s.
This context will also identify historic resources that warrant future intensive-level surveys to determine their
relative importance to Fort Collins' history, and will form the basis for tours and other educational opportunities
around Robb's work. The identification, protection and enhancement of historic resources is a principle of City
Plan, as well as a strategy to promote neighborhood livability and social health in the City’s Strategic Plan.
CITY FINANCIAL IMPACTS
The Ordinance appropriates $21,588 in the General Fund to prepare a historic contextual report on Fort Collins
architect William "Bill" Robb. These funds include $15,588 received as a State Historical Fund grant from History
Colorado, and $6,000 of funding from the Historic Preservation Division's 2020 Budget.
