WHEREAS, on behalf of the City of Fort Collins, I wish to extend our sincere
condolences over the passing of Beryl “Brownie” McGraw, widow of Colorado State athletic
legend Thurman “Fum” McGraw, on March 30, 2020; and
WHEREAS, Brownie McGraw was a community icon who worked with many different
organizations and activities and was an award-winning educator, tireless volunteer, advocate for
youth and community visionary; and
WHEREAS, as an educator who loved teaching, she held various positions in Poudre
School District for 35 years, including serving as the District’s first female high school principal
at Rocky Mountain High School in 1983-84. She taught at Wellington and Blevins Junior High
Schools, was an administrator at Blevins and Rocky Mountain, served as principal at Lincoln
Junior High and worked as a collaboration specialist with the Poudre Transition Center; and
WHEREAS, to honor Brownie’s dedication to education, McGraw Elementary School in
southwest Fort Collins was named in her honor when it opened in 1992; and
WHEREAS, upon retiring from Poudre School District, she served as a juvenile
specialist for 20 years with the District Attorney’s Office, retiring for the second time at 80 years
old; and
WHEREAS, Brownie McGraw contributed greatly to the Fort Collins community,
proudly serving on many boards and committees and played a major role in fundraising efforts
for the Inspiration Playground at Spring Canyon Park, the innovative play area universally
accessible to all children, including those with special needs.
WHEREAS, Brownie loved her husband and family, friends and beloved Rams very
much, and consistently gave her all, working to make our community better.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Wade Troxell, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby
proclaim August 18, 2020 as
BROWNIE MCGRAW DAY
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and the seal of the City of Fort
Collins this 18th day of August, A.D. 2020.
