BACKGROUND / DISCUSSION
City Council is committed to compensating employees in a manner which is market based, competitive and
understandable. The goal as an employer is to attract, retain, engage, develop and reward a diverse and
competitive workforce to meet the needs of the community now and in the future.
Council has expressed some interest in considering appointment of Councilmembers to an ad hoc committee
to review and discuss the processes and practices related to compensation for Council direct reports. The
committee’s purpose would be to review the market definition, benchmark cities, data collection and analysis
methodology with respect to salary, retirement, vacation and other aspects of total compensation. If formed
with the Council’s approval, the recommendations of the ad hoc committee will be brought forward at a future
City Council meeting.
