HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOUNCIL - PROCLAMATION - 03/19/2019 - PROCLAMATION DECLARING MARCH 31-APRIL 7, 2019 AS IPROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the City is committed to reducing light pollution by minimizing glare, light trespass, and sky glow while conserving energy and resources; and WHEREAS, outdoor lighting best-practices can preserve, protect, and enhance the night sky and can mitigate adverse impacts to human health and wildlife habitat; and WHEREAS, the City supports pursuing night sky protection without compromising health, safety or security; and WHEREAS, International Dark Sky Week is March 31-Sunday, April 1 and helps draw attention to the problems associated with light pollution and promotes simple solutions to mitigate it; and WHEREAS, the solutions can be as easy as using light only where you need it, when you need it, with the minimum amount of light needed, while shielding lights and directing light downward; and WHEREAS, the average light pollution in Fort Collins is 20 times brighter than natural conditions and; WHEREAS, protecting the night sky helps our community improve and maintain its unique sense of place, neighborhood livability, safety, and quality of life; and WHEREAS, the City of Fort Collins is acting to minimize light pollution through data collection and monitoring, education and technical assistance, improved technology for street lights and City facilities, building and land use code changes, and other initiatives; NOW, THEREFORE, I, Wade Troxell, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim the week of March 31 to April 7, 2019, as INTERNATIONAL DARK SKY WEEK IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and the seal of the City of Fort Collins this 19th day of March, A.D. 2019. __________________________________ ATTEST: Mayor _________________________________ City Clerk
