HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOUNCIL - PROCLAMATION - 09/18/2018 - PROCLAMATION DECLARING SEPTEMBER 2018 AS CHILDHOODPROCLAMATION WHEREAS, childhood cancer is the number one cause of death from disease among our children, is detected in more than 15,000 of our country’s sons and daughters every year and five children die from cancer every day in the U.S.; and WHEREAS, 32 percent of childhood cancer survivors suffer severe, disabling, or life- threatening late effects of treatment; and WHEREAS, only four percent of federal government cancer research funding goes to childhood cancer and only one percent of the American Cancer Society funding goes to childhood cancer research; and WHEREAS, National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is a time to honor and remember the children whose young lives were taken too soon and the families facing childhood cancer today; and WHEREAS, thanks to advances in research and treatment, the five year survival rate for all childhood cancers has climbed from less than 50 percent to over 80 percent and WHEREAS, help does not come soon enough for many of our sons and daughters and too many families suffer pain and devastating loss; and WHEREAS, our community has the opportunity to rally support for all those who continue to battle this illness with incredible strength and courage, NOW, THEREFORE, I, Wade Troxell, Mayor of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim the month of September 2018 as CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and the seal of the City of Fort Collins this 18th day of September, A.D. 2018. __________________________________ Mayor ATTEST: _________________________________ City Clerk
