HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOUNCIL - PROCLAMATION - 05/01/2018 - PROCLAMATION DECLARING MAY 2018 AS MENTAL HEALTH APROCLAMATION WHEREAS, mental health is essential to everyone’s overall physical health and emotional well-being, but one in five citizens is affected by a mental illness each year regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion or economic status; and WHEREAS, we too often think about mental health differently from other forms of health yet, like any disease, mental illnesses can be treated; and WHEREAS, a continuum of care, including prevention, early identification and early intervention along with crisis care, treatment and stabilization and recovery services, are effective ways to address mental health issues. Comprehensive, community-based services that respond to individuals with mental health needs are cost-effective and beneficial to consumers and our community; and WHEREAS, access to necessary medication and appropriate treatment helps prevent individuals from ending up in emergency rooms and jails; and. WHEREAS, recognizing the importance of mental health services in our community is critical to individuals, families, businesses, law enforcement, healthcare providers; and WHEREAS, it costs seven times more to incarcerate someone with mental health issues than to treat them in the community. There is a strong and growing body of evidence that supports the cost effectiveness and benefits to communities that have successfully implemented continuums of integrated behavioral healthcare. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Wade Troxell, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim May 2018 as MENTAL HEALTH MONTH We also call upon all to commit our community to increasing awareness and understanding of mental health, and the need for appropriate and accessible services for all citizens.
