HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOUNCIL - PROCLAMATION - 05/01/2018 - PROCLAMATION DECLARING MAY 2018 AS MENTAL HEALTH APROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, mental health is essential to everyone’s overall physical health and
emotional well-being, but one in five citizens is affected by a mental illness each year regardless
of age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion or economic status; and
WHEREAS, we too often think about mental health differently from other forms of health yet, like any
disease, mental illnesses can be treated; and
WHEREAS, a continuum of care, including prevention, early identification and early
intervention along with crisis care, treatment and stabilization and recovery services, are
effective ways to address mental health issues. Comprehensive, community-based services that
respond to individuals with mental health needs are cost-effective and beneficial to consumers
and our community; and
WHEREAS, access to necessary medication and appropriate treatment helps prevent
individuals from ending up in emergency rooms and jails; and.
WHEREAS, recognizing the importance of mental health services in our community is
critical to individuals, families, businesses, law enforcement, healthcare providers; and
WHEREAS, it costs seven times more to incarcerate someone with mental health issues
than to treat them in the community. There is a strong and growing body of evidence that
supports the cost effectiveness and benefits to communities that have successfully implemented
continuums of integrated behavioral healthcare.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Wade Troxell, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby
proclaim May 2018 as
MENTAL HEALTH MONTH
We also call upon all to commit our community to increasing awareness and understanding of
mental health, and the need for appropriate and accessible services for all citizens.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and the seal of the City of Fort
Collins this 1st day of May, A.D. 2018.
