HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOUNCIL - PROCLAMATION - 11/03/2015 - PROCLAMATION DECLARING NOVEMBER 15-21 GEOGRAPHY AWPROCLAMATION WHEREAS, geography education will be incorporated in classrooms and lessons throughout the country, increasing the geo-literacy of students nationwide; and WHEREAS, the focus on “Explore! The Power of Maps” this year will encourage learning about the Colorado cultural, political, and physical landscapes and our interdependence and interconnection to the world beyond our state’s and nation’s borders; and WHEREAS, geography education bolsters core social studies, science, and technology literacy in our elementary and secondary students by featuring grade-appropriate geography literacy goals and content standards; and WHEREAS, geography education will encourage schools and colleges to partner with local museums, governments, nature centers, science centers; and WHEREAS, geography education also prepares young people to deal with the challenges that they will face in their civic lives, as our society witnesses globalization, military and political conflicts, community development, increasing global population, climate change, availability of natural resources and energy, and other issues; and WHEREAS, Geography Awareness Week, coordinated by the National Geographic Society, in cooperation with state geographic alliances, education associations, and agencies will become an annually anticipated event for local participation in schools and various education centers in Fort Collins during the third week of November. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Wade Troxell, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins do hereby proclaim November 15 through November 21, 2015 as GEOGRAPHY AWARENESS WEEK in Fort Collins and urge all citizens to recognize and participate in this special observance.
