Why do you want to become a member of this particular board or commission? Transportation is, as
it seems to me, a growing concern in Fort Collins. I would like to help with this issue, either by learning more
about transportation and explaining the issues to others, or by giving my input about the issues.
Have you attended a meeting of the board or commission you are applying to or talked to anyone currently on the board?

None specifically.

Briefly explain what you believe are the three most important issues facing this board or commission, and how do you
believe this board or commission should address each issue?
1) As Fort Collins grows, it is important to address issues with congestion and safety. Discussing options
for relieving this congestion is imperative. Though much of the congestion is caused by the much needed
and appreciated construction going on through the city, population will remain a long term concern.
Examining traffic patterns and ways to possibly alternate traffic patterns could help with the long
term process. Providing alternate means & routes and convincing the public (with information and outreach)
to use said alternatives will be important.
2) Public transportation remains to be an issue. It is a common occurrence that it takes passengers on
public transportation 1.5 - 2 hours to get across town. While the addition of the MAX line has been
wonderful, other options and alternatives must be discussed. Ease of access and speed in travel will
only encourage people to utilize public transportation will also help relive congestion.
3) Finally, I think the issue of safety has become more necessary. The number of distracted drivers in
this city is atrocious. Public outreach to address this issue is important. Also, there needs to be
discussions about the repercussions for distracted driving. Not only is it a danger in itself, as congestion
increases and distracted driving causes delays at lights (for example), aggressive responses by other
drivers causes its own danger.
Please specify any activities which might create a serious conflict of interest if you should be appointed to this board
or commission:
None. I am a teacher and am off of work by 4:30 each day.
Have you ever been convicted of a crime (except for minor traffic offenses that resulted only in a fine)? Yes No
If yes, please explain in complete detail. State the nature and approximate date of the conviction,
the sentence imposed, whether the sentence has been completed, and any other information you
consider to be relevant
Upon application for and acceptance of appointment, board and commission members demonstrate their intention and
ability to attend meetings. If appointed, frequent nonattendance may result in termination of the appointment.
By typing your name in the space provided, I submit my electronic signature and application to the City of Fort Collins
and swear or affirm under penalty of perjury pursuant to the laws of the State of Colorado:
-that I meet the eligibility requirements of the position sought and
-that the information provided in this application is true and correct to the best of my knowledge.
Signature: Karl Ayers Date: Oct-11-2016
Optional: How did you learn of a vacancy on this board or commission:
Newspaper Cable 14 City News (Utility Bill Insert) Website
Other (please specify)
I realize that I have no experience with this commission. I do not want to be a
"fire brand" and try to make improvements and come with an attitude that I will
do better than everyone before. However, I do think that fresh perspectives on problems
can be useful. So, as the transportation within my area is, obviously, important
to me, any way that I can help out is important to me. Thank you for your consideration, Karl
Ayers.
