WHEREAS, across our state and our nation, one in four women and one in 14 men
suffer at the hands of someone who is supposed to love them and more than 15 million children
are exposed to domestic violence each year; and
WHEREAS, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, almost half
of all murders in Colorado are committed by an intimate partner; and
WHEREAS, in Fort Collins, Crossroads Safehouse provides safety, support and hope to
survivors and their children. In 2014 Crossroads Safehouse provided emergency shelter to 525
men, women and children and responded to more than 10,000 crisis calls from individuals and
families in need; and
WHEREAS, during National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we renew our
commitment to prevent domestic violence, hold perpetrators accountable for their actions,
support survivors and bring hope and healing to those affected by it; and
WHEREAS, Crossroads Safehouse and other local nonprofit agencies and their
volunteers offer critical assistance and support to victims in need—help that might otherwise not
be available. Victims and their children receive potentially lifesaving crisis intervention and
shelter, food, clothing, advocacy and counseling, longer-term housing options, and legal
resources, as well as referral and other supportive services to rebuild their lives free from
violence and abuse.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Wade Troxell, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby
proclaim the month of October as
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
in the city of Fort Collins and ask the citizens of this community to help raise awareness about
how to prevent, recognize, and stop domestic violence.
