HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOUNCIL - PROCLAMATION - 09/01/2015 - PROCLAMATION DECLARING SEPTEMBER AS SUICIDE AWARENPROCLAMATION WHEREAS, Larimer County lost 83 individuals to suicide in 2014; and WHEREAS, over the last ten years more than 591 people have died by suicide in Larimer County; and WHEREAS, suicide permeates all demographic boundaries and causes extreme suffering, grieving, and pain that affects families, schools and communities; and WHEREAS, many of the social, demographic, biological, clinical, and behavioral risk factors for suicide are known, and many promising strategies exist to prevent suicide; and WHEREAS, the risk for human self-destruction can be reduced through awareness, education and treatment, making it necessary to regard suicide as a major health problem and to support educational programs, research projects, and services providing support and resources to those who have lost a loved one to suicide; and WHEREAS, the Alliance for Suicide Prevention’s mission is to prevent suicide by raising awareness, educating and training youth and adults about depression and suicide and providing resources and support to those who have been impacted; and WHEREAS, events and presentations are planned for the month of September to help educate Poudre School District students, faculty, staff, parents, and others about suicide and promote awareness of available resources. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Wade Troxell, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim the month of September as SUICIDE AWARENESS MONTH in the city of Fort Collins.
