WHEREAS, the Rocky Mountain Collegian was founded in 1891 by students of
Colorado State University and has operated continuously in the Fort Collins community for over
125 years and is one of the oldest student newspapers west of the Mississippi and the longest
serving in Colorado; and
WHEREAS, for 125 years, the production of a student-led newspaper has served to
educate future journalists while providing a forum for public discourse throughout the Fort
Collins community; and
WHEREAS, during the course of its publication, the Rocky Mountain Collegian has
been ranked one of the top-three daily student newspapers by the Society of Professional
Journalists and numerous accolades on the national level; and
WHEREAS, the Rocky Mountain Collegian reflects the unique character of the
UniverCity community in Fort Collins with meaningful distribution in the larger Fort Collins
community and dedication to covering local issues and candidates; and
WHEREAS, the Rocky Mountain Collegian will continue to help inform and engage its
readers in the Fort Collins community for the foreseeable future while producing top-tier
journalists who bring pride to our community.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Wade Troxell, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby
proclaim December 2016 as
STUDENT MEDIA CELEBRATION MONTH
and encourage citizens to enjoy a free copy of the Rocky Mountain Collegian in celebration of
Student Media Month.
