WHEREAS, mental health is critical for the well-being and vitality of ourfamilies, businesses, and
communities; and
WHEREAS, mental disorders, collectively, make mental illness the most prevalent health problem
in America today - more common than cancer, lung and heart disease combined; and
WHEREAS, 60,000 people in Larimer County suffer from mental illness, substance abuse or
addiction and 20,000 individuals experience significantfunctional impairment as a result of mental illness
or substance abuse; and
WHEREAS, more than 90 percent of people who die from suicide suffer from depression or other
mental illness; and
WHEREAS, lastyear one person in Larimer County died every 10 days from suicide, a rate almost
40 percent higher than the national average; and
WHEREAS, the City of Fort Collins has made a commitment to mental health care and suicide
prevention for all residents and to join mental health services providers in raising awareness and
understanding of mental health, mental illness and suicide.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ray Martinez, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim the
month of May as
MENTAL HEALTH MONTH
in the city of Fort Collins and call upon all citizens, government officials, and agencies in Fort Collins to
recommit our resources to increase awareness and understanding of mental illnesses and the need for
appropriate and accessible services for all people with mental illnesses.
