HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOUNCIL - PROCLAMATION - 03/05/2013 - PROCLAMATION DECLARING MARCH 8, 2013, AS INTERNATIPROCLAMATION WHEREAS, women play a critical role in every country and every sphere of life; and Whereas, women in the United States and in Fort Collins serve as leaders and work on behalf of all people; and WHEREAS, the work of women began at the founding of the city - in 1916, women in the local Red Cross, with offices in the basement of the YMCA, made garments for soldiers overseas. In 1928, the Public Health Association, with several women members, provided free services to 100 people needing dental and surgical attention. From the foundation of the city to present day, the actions of women in Fort Collins have been critical to our community; and WHEREAS, throughout history, women with diverse, international backgrounds have played a role in the growth and development of the city. Women came to the city as part of the influx of German-Russian and Hispanic workers who came to help beet growers harvest crops in the early 1900s, and today Fort Collins is home to more than 1,400 foreign students and scholars from more than 85 countries; and WHEREAS, International Women’s Day has been observed nationally since the early 1900s to celebrate women’s achievements; and WHEREAS, March is celebrated in the United States as Women’s History Month. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Karen Weitkunat, Mayor of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim March 8, 2013, as INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY and the month of March 2013 as WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and the seal of the City of Fort Collins this 5th day of March, A.D. 2013. __________________________________ Mayor ATTEST: _________________________________ City Clerk
