City of Fort Collins PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, despite ongoing efforts to better protect child passengers in cars, motor vehicle crashes remain
the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 14 and under; and
WHEREAS, eachyear, motor vehicle crashes claim nearly 1,800 child passengers lives and result in more
than 274,000 child passenger injuries; and
WHEREAS, as many as 30 percent of the children in the United States continue to ride completely
unrestrained and of those who are buckled up,four out of five children are improperly secured; and
WHEREAS, there is little dispute that child safety seats and safety belts, when used correctly and
consistently, are extremely effective in saving lives and preventing injuries; and
WHEREAS, the National SAFE KIDS Campaign and its 300 coalitions are launching a five-year initiative
to "close the gaps" in child occupant protection laws to help ensure that all children are properly protected while
traveling in motor vehicles; and
WHEREAS, the Larimer County SAFE KIDS Coalition has planned community-based child passenger
•safety events and activities, including improving Colorado's child occupant protection laws, in an effort to educate
families about child occupant protection.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ray Martinez, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim the week
of February 11-17, 2001 as
Child Passenger Safety Week
in the city of Fort Collins and call upon the residents of this city to join with me in supporting the efforts and
activities of the Larimer County SAFE KIDS Coalition to prevent motor vehicle injuries and deaths to our
children.
