Second Reading of Ordinance No. 145, 2001,Amending Section 2-167 of the City Code Relating
to Membership of the Commission on the Status of Women.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff and the Commission on the Status of Women recommend adoption of the Ordinance on Second
Reading.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Ordinance No. 145,2001,which was unanimously adopted on First Reading on September 4,2001,
reduces the membership of the Commission effective September 28, 2001.

At its August 20, 2001 meeting, the Commission on the Status of Women discussed the merits of
reducing its membership from 11 members to 9 members. This Ordinance, if adopted,will reduce
the membership of the Commission effective September 28,2001 (10 days following final adoption
of the Ordinance on Second Reading,on_Sgtember 18, 266)L

ACKGROUND:
The Commission on the Status of Women was created on April 1, 1986 by adoption of Resolution
86-65. The Commission has experienced ongoing difficulties in reaching a quorum at its meetings.
In September 2000,at the Commission's request,the Council reduced the number of members from
13 to 11. Lack of attendance'and vacancies continue to be a problem, and further reduction of the
membership is expelled to irnprcfve this situation without negatively impacting the Commission's
ability to fulfill its function. Th'60'i- a curren4y two vacancies on the Commission; therefore,
reduction of the membership can occur`af this`time without negative impact.
