The owner of the property,Karen Murray,is initiaiiiigthis request for Fort Collins Local Landmark
designation for the Beach Residence. This residencehas architectural significance to Fort Collins,
as a good example of the American Foursquare architectural style in Fort Collins. Additionally, the
home is associated with Thom, A and 1 ua'13 -.h,early Fait Collins residents and entrepreneurs.
History -Named for the original owners, Thomas'A.,and Lucy Beach, the home was at one time
a part of the Beach's 117 acre farm. Thomas Beach was the president of the Fort Collins Packing
Company, a meat packing plant and retail outlet located on Linden Street. He also owned the
College Avenue Market, which he established in 1878 to sell the meat produced at his packing
company. The College AvenueMarket was one of the first in Fort Collins, and was located in a two-
story brick building"on College Avenue. In 1922, the Beaches sold the home to John A. Deines.
Deines,,vas a rancher. From 1460 2000, John and Eloise Martin owned the house. Today, the
two-story residence belongs to Kar`enMurray:
This Foursquare home features red brick walls under a hipped roof, with overhanging eaves and
exposed IN
rafters. A hipped roof front dormer has paired windows with a geometric pattern of
triangular glazing. The flat roof porch has a cornice line balustrade and classical column supports.
Widows are predominately one-over-one double hung, with rusticated stone sills. The side
elevations feature segmental,a.A, ed windows, and the home has a rounded two story bay on the east
elevation. A'large brick chimney is located on the east elevation.
r,
The home has undergone two alterations of note. In circa 1962,the Martins added a flat roofed two-
bay garage to the northeast (rear) corner. In 2000, Karen Murray, with the assistance of the
Landmark Preservation Commission's Preservation Review Subcommittee, designed a two-story
brick addition. Built on the west elevation, the addition complements the historic construction,
including classical columns, balustrade porch railing, and segmentally arched windows,to match the
original.
