City of Fort Collins PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, we aspire to live in a world free from hate or violence; and
WHEREAS, freedom from hatred and violence begins in each moment that we create peace within
ourselves, and with all beings; and
WHEREAS,practicing peace in every step is crucial to all who suffer from hatred, violence, war and
terrorism; and
WHEREAS,Fort Collins is known as a "City of Character"and enjoys a high level of civility and harmony
in the community; and
WHEREAS, September marks the anniversary of the 9111 attacks and we have learned many things about
the world and ourselves as a result of this tragedy; and
WHEREAS, our community will hold many educational events to teach peace to commemorate September
11 th; and
WHEREAS, it is important to acknowledge the contributions made by those dedicated to the practice and
teachingofpeace; and
• WHEREAS, the zen master, the Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh and his international monastic delegation of
men and women, who dedicate their lives to engage peace, are visiting Colorado from the August 18-25, 2002;and
WHEREAS, their visit supports and strengthens our efforts for peace in ourselves, in our families, in our
community and in the world;
NOW, THEREFORE,I,Ray Martinez, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim August 20,
2002 through September 20, 2002 as
Observance of Engaged Peace Month
in the City of Fort Collins and recognize the efforts of Thich Nhat Hanh and all others whopromotepeace and call
upon the people of the City of Fort Collins to join in recognizing and participating in this special observance.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and the seal of the City of Fort Collins this 20th
day of August, A.D. 2002.
