HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOUNCIL - PROCLAMATION - 04/16/2013 - PROCLAMATION DECLARING APRIL 21 AS POLICE SERVICESPROCLAMATION WHEREAS, 100 years ago, on April 21,1913, the Fort Collins Police Department was formed; and WHEREAS, the roots of Fort Collins Police can be traced to the late 1800s when Edwin Lakin Peterson was elected to serve as the first constable in 1873; and WHEREAS, other constables and marshals provided police services to the community until 1913, when the Fort Collins Police Department was formed and assumed the responsibilities of the U. S. Marshal’s Office; and WHEREAS, Chief Albert Baker served as the first Chief of Police for Fort Collins; and WHEREAS, in 1925, six officers and Chief Albert Baker comprised the department located in the first City building at 234 Walnut Street, constructed in 1882; and WHEREAS, Fort Collins Police moved to its current state-of-the-art headquarters building at 2221 South Timberline Road in 2007; and WHEREAS, today, Fort Collins Police Services, led by Chief John Hutto, is comprised of 197 sworn officers and 103 civilian employees who provide professional and quality police services to the citizens of Fort Collins. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Karen Weitkunat, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim April 21, 2013 as FORT COLLINS POLICE DAY and encourage all residents to join the City in celebrating “A Century of Service” from April 21, 2013 to April 20, 2014.
