HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOUNCIL - PROCLAMATION - 02/05/2013 - PROCLAMATION DECLARING FEBRUARY 14, 2013 AS CONGENPROCLAMATION WHEREAS, congenital heart disease is a birth defect of the heart muscle and is a unique and entirely different disease from adult-onset acquired cardiovascular disease; and WHEREAS, congenital heart defects have no universal cause, no universal cure, and in most cases cannot be prevented; and WHEREAS, according to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 36,000 infants are born with congenital heart defects each year in the United States and 8,000 of those babies will die in their first year of life; and WHEREAS, congenital heart defects are both the most common and the most lethal birth defects, affecting over 50,000 Colorado babies, children, and adults and their families and friends who care for and love them; and WHEREAS, according to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, congenital heart defects are the leading cause of death for infants born with a birth defect and a leading cause of infant mortality the world over, and the life expectancy and quality of life of 2 million Americans battling congenital heart defects is limited due to the medical needs of those affected by this disease; and WHEREAS, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute has stated that congenital heart defects are a serious and underappreciated global health risk. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Karen Weitkunat, Mayor of Fort Collins, Colorado, do hereby officially proclaim February 14, 2013 as CONGENITAL HEART DEFECT AND CHILDREN’S HEART DAY in Fort Collins, and urge the entire community to come to together to participate in giving faith, hope, love, and commitment to children and families impacted by congenital heart disease.
