PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) convened a Task Force
in the Fort Collins community to focus on sharing the road; and
WHEREAS, the purpose of this Task Force is to expand the reach of the "Fort Collins
Shares the Road" message through a community-based collaborative dialogue that addresses the
interests of as many different types of road users as possible, including motorists, bicyclists,
pedestrians, motorcyclists, truck drivers, wheelchair users, transit 'operators and users, scooters,
skateboards, etc.; and
WHEREAS, through this effort, the Task Force members educated each other about the
needs, concerns, and interests, and developed strategies that sought to benefit all of the diverse
transportation users; and
WHEREAS,the ultimate goal is to promote safety and more cooperative road use through
practical strategies that increase the broader recognition of"shared responsibility"; and
WHEREAS,CDOT has provided $5,000 in seed money for the Fort Collins Task Force to
use in implementing their top priority strategies that include "Fort Collins Shares the Road" street
banners and matching signs on bus shelters/vehicles as well as future outreach in partnership with
local businesses.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Karen Weitkunat, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby
proclaim support for the 2011-2012 safety campaign:
FORT COLLINS SHARES THE ROAD
in Fort Collins and encourage citizens to increase our awareness of fellow travelers, and thereby
promote safety and courtesy to people using all modes of transportation.
