WHEREAS, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations
on December 10, 1948; and
WHEREAS, it was the first time a document declaring human rights and fundamental
freedoms was adopted by an international organization, and it continues to have universal value in
defending and advancing people’s rights; and
WHEREAS, America’s commitment to individual freedom and democracy provides the
foundation for our society and the Bill of Rights serves to guide our people and our government to
ensure basic human rights and liberties; and
WHEREAS, as a community, we are committed to upholding these principles and making
Fort Collins a place where all citizens have the opportunity to voice their opinions, practice their
faith, and enjoy the blessings of freedom; and
WHEREAS, our nation and our community find encouragement in rallying together to
defend human rights. By working together to advance the rights of all people, we help to build
mutual trust and harmony for all individuals in our community.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Karen Weitkunat, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby
proclaim December 10, 2012 as
INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY
in Fort Collins and hereby encourage all residents, businesses, and institutions to recognize
International Human Rights Day 2011 by observing our nation’s Bill of Rights and pledging to
uphold the universal principles of liberty and justice that define our dreams and shape our hopes as
we face the challenges of a new era.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and the seal of the City of Fort
Collins this 4th day of December, A.D. 2012.
