HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOUNCIL - PROCLAMATION - 11/02/2010 - PROCLAMATION DECLARING NOVEMBER 2, 2010 AS THE STA City of F6rt Collins PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the air quality of the North Front Range affects the health and well-being of all the residents of the region; and WHEREAS, pursuant to U.S. EPA standards,our region is currently a non-attainment area for ground level ozone; and WHEREAS, idling a gasoline vehicle for five minutes each day can emit as much as 25 pounds of harmful air pollutants and 260 pounds of carbon dioxide in a year; and WHEREAS, asthma is the most common chronic condition in children, affecting over 89,000 children in Colorado, ages 1-14, and asthma symptoms are worsened by increased car exhaust; and WHEREAS, encouraging drivers to turn off their engines to avoid unnecessary idling can decrease toxic emissions that contribute to ground level ozone and other health problems,.as well as save money; and WHEREAS,in recognition of the multiple benefits of reduced idling,it is the adopted policy of the City of Fort Collins to limit City vehicle idling to not more than 30 consecutive seconds, or not more than 5 minutes total in any 1 hour, with certain exceptions; and WHEREAS, the City of Fort Collins is joining Poudre School District and other organizations in a regional partnership,kicking off today,to unite governments,schools,businesses and residents in a voluntary effort to reduce harmful emissions associated with idling and to improve regional air quality. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Doug Hutchinson, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim November 2, 2010 as the official start of the "BREATHE EASY" ANTI-IDLING CAMPAIGN IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and the seal of the City of Fort Collins this 2nd day of November, A.D. 2010.
