City of Fort Collins
PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, unintentional injury is the number one killer of children ages 14 and under--
each year nearly 6,000 children from this age group die from unintentional injuries, nearly 120,000
children are permanently disabled, and one out of every four children hurt requires emergency
medical attention; and
WHEREAS, the National SAFE KIDS Campaign promotes childhood injury preven tion by
uniting diverse groups into local and state coalitions, developing innovative educational tools and
strategies, initiating public policy changes, promoting new technology, and raising awareness
through the media; and
WHEREAS, the Fort Collins Parents of Multiples Club, along with SAFE KIDS Larimer
County Coalition, are hosting the 4th Annual Children's Safety Fair and Car Seat Check Up Event,
"Your Passport to Safety-Make it a SAFE Back to School!"which focuses on the five deadliest risk
areas of motor vehicle crashes, drownings,pedestrian injuries, biking injuries, and falls; and
WHEREAS, the 4th Annual Children's Safety Fair and Car Seat Check Up Event includes
a community-based interactive safety event with injury prevention activities in an effort to educate
families about child safety.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ray Martinez, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins do hereby
proclaim September 13, 2003 as
A DAY OF EDUCATIONAND AWARENESS FOR CHILDREN'S SAFETY
in the city of Fort Collins and call upon all the residents of this city to join with me in supporting
the efforts and activities oftheFort Collins Parents ofMultiples Club with the SAFEKIDS Coalition
to prevent childhood injury.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I, have hereunto set my hand and the seal of the City of Fort
Collins this 2nd day of September, A.D. 2003.
