PROCLAMATION
City of Fort Collins
WHEREAS, there are sound economic, environmental and social reasons for local entities to encourage
recycling to reduce disposalcosts,conserve resources andprotect the environment. Local communities can do much
to reverse environmental degradation and contribute to building a healthy society; and
WHEREAS, Colorado State University is recognized as a top research university where interest in the
environment runs deep throughout the campus and the Fort Collins community. Colorado's environment serves as
an "outside"classroom for Colorado State University. The University teaches students by showing commitment to
the environment through education, research and in its day-to-day operations. The Departments of Housing and
Food Service, Facilities Management, and ASCSU commit to support the Earth Day Recycling 2003 campaign
through the following actions:
Providing fire proof, non-toxic bins and recycling containers for all ten residence halls and
encourage student participation while highlighting the location of the collection bins at the
residence halls; and
Beginning an extensive promotional campaign to educate and raise awareness in the University
Apartment, Pingree Park Campus and fraternities and sororities; and
Successful composting and vericomposting efforts by leadership organizations like Colorado State
. University and the City of Fort Collins serve as modelsfor other to use,andfurther demonstrate our
deep commitment to be environmental stewards; and
Continuing to work with the Food Bank ofLarimer County to increase the amount offood donated
not only as a result of the Leave-It-Behind Program, but throughout the academic year as well;and
Supporting the Tallories Declaration, the agreement toward "sustainability" which implies that
major activities on campus are ecologically sound, socially fast, economically viable and humane
and that they will continue to be for future generations.
NOW, THEREFORE, 1, Ray Martinez, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim March 20-
April 22 as
FORT COLLINS EDUCATIONAL RECYCLE MONTH 2O03
in the city of Fort Collins and hereby encourage all residents, business and institutions to use RECYCLE
EDUCATIONMONTH2O03 to celebrate peace and care to the earth and help restore and renew the wonder of life
on our planet-- one human family, one earth!
