First Reading of Ordinance No. 127, 2010, Amending Section 27-38 of the City Code Relating to the Licensing of
Arborists.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Currently, arborist licenses expire one year after they are issued. This results in renewal times and notices being sent
throughout the year. The purpose of this change is to make all licenses come due for renewal on the same date each
year.
BACKGROUND / DISCUSSION
Historically, the Forestry Division has issued an arborist license to each company that meet the licensing requirements
for the City. A licensing fee of$25 is charged to each company at the time of issuance. The license currently is valid
for a one-year period from date of issue. After the initial license is issued, tracking and sending out renewal
information is not efficient. Staff believes it would be more effective and efficient to cause every license to be renewed
by January 31 of each year, beginning in 2011. This system will allow staff to renew all licenses at the same time
rather than spreading the process throughout the year.
FINANCIAL / ECONOMIC IMPACTS
An increased efficiency and use of staff time will result from adopting the change.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends adoption of the Ordinance on First Reading.
PUBLIC OUTREACH
Staff has discussed this Code change with many licensed arborists in the City and all agreed that this would be
beneficial for them as well as for Forestry staff.
