HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOUNCIL - PROCLAMATION - 09/07/2010 - PROCLAMATION DECLARING SEPTEMBER 13-19, 2010, AS A City of Fort Collins PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, adult literacy is defined as using printed and written information to function in society to achieve one's goals and to develop one's knowledge and potential; and WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of Education estimates that 93 million U.S. adults read below the 4th grade level; and WHEREAS, in Colorado one in five students does not graduate from high school; and WHEREAS, Colorado adult education centers serve about 15,000 GED and ESL students from ages 17 to 60 and students who earn a GED high school diploma equivalency can then enter college or post-secondary technical programs; and WHEREAS, half of the adults who do not have a high school diploma perform below the 4th grade level; and WHEREAS, over 41% of incarcerated adults did not complete high school; and WHEREAS, the most effective way to improve the academic success of a child is by improving the educational level of the parent; and WHEREAS,literacy skills impact every aspect of an adult's life,including the ability to read to their child,earn a family-supporting wage, make informed health care decisions, and understand voting issues. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Doug Hutchinson, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim September 13 through 19, 2010, as ADULT EDUCATION AND FAMILY LITERACY WEEK in Fort Collins, Colorado.
