PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, many people are not aware of the serious hunger problem that exists in Larimer
County; and
WHEREAS, the economic recession and subsequent massive lay-offs have contributed to a
significant increase in the number of our friends and neighbors who are unable to feed their families;and
WHEREAS, the cost of basic housing is out of reach for many low-income households, which are
often headed by single parents, while the majority of job growth lies in low paying service and retail
industries; and
WHEREAS, the vast majority of Food Bank for Larimer County clients have to choose between
paying for food or paying for housing, utilities, or medical care; and
WHEREAS,having served as a reliable food resource for people in need and nearly 100 charitable
partner agencies with kitchens,pantries, shelters and after-school programs, the Food Bank for Larimer
County increased its initial distribution of 56,000 pounds offood in 1984 to more than 3.4 million pounds
in 2002—in spite of this tremendous effort, the need for hunger relief continues to climb; and
WHEREAS, the Food Bank for Larimer County has joined with America's Second Harvest, the
nation's largest food bank and food rescue network, to bringpublic attention to the serious issue of hunger.
NOW, THEREFORE,I, Ray Martinez, Mayor of the city of Fort Collins, do hereby recognize the
Food Bank for Larimer County for recently hosting the"Community Leader Food Sorting Event"in order
to bring attention to National Hunger Awareness Day and to enhance awareness and advocate for those
needing food assistance in our community.
