PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the achievements of ordinary
women past, present and future; and
WHEREAS, around the world human trafficking traumatizes and injures women, endangers
children, harms families, and threatens communities; and
WHEREAS,the International Labor Organization estimates that approximately 12.3 million people
are enslaved in forced or bonded labor,child labor, sexual servitude,and involuntary servitude at any given
time, with approximately 75 percent of all victims trafficked for sexual exploitation; and
WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has concluded that human
trafficking is now tied with the illegal arms industry as the second largest criminal industry in the world
today; and
WHEREAS, approximately two million women and children are held in sexual servitude around
the world, and 30,000— 50,000 sex slaves in the United States at any time; and
WHEREAS, Soroptimist countries and regions are encouraged to increase public awareness about
trafficking. Lawmakers and law enforcement officials are urged to produce and enforce legislation that
punishes traffickers and those that purchase sex and develop economic opportunities and alternatives for
potential trafficking victims; and
WHEREAS, Soroptimist International of Fort Collins joins Soroptimist clubs throughout Rocky
Mountain Region in seeking local proclamations against trafficking of women and girls in local communities
and throughout the world.
NOW,THEREFORE,I,Doug Hutchinson,Mayor of the City of Fort Collins,do hereby proclaim
the month of March 2010 as
"Stop the Traffik-End Human Trafficking" Month
in Fort Collins and call upon our citizens to help "Stop the Traffik" and end human trafficking.
