PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS,the Census Bureau is mandated by the U.S.Constitution to take a census every
10 years; and
WHEREAS, Census data determines each state's congressional representation and Census
2010 will be very important because redistricting will occur at the state level using data collected
in the 2010 Census; and
WHEREAS, Census data forms the basis for the allocation of more than $400 billion of
federal and state financial assistance that allows governments to provide services and facilities
needed by our citizens, especially those of lower incomes who cannot afford to totally provide for
their needs for housing, food, medicine, day care, and job training; and
WHEREAS,Census 2010 begins in mid-March and the citizens of Fort Collins will receive
their Census Survey Questionnaires through the mail; this information is private and protected by
law and used only to produce statistics.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Doug Hutchinson, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby
proclaim the month of March 2010 as
CENSUS 2010 AWARENESS MONTH
in Fort Collins in recognition of the importance of the 2010 Census to the future of our city and urge
all citizens to answer the Census questionnaire with the knowledge that their answers are
confidential and protected by Federal Law. I also want to acknowledge the efforts of the Fort Collins
Census Complete Count Committee who have been diligently been working to: (1) increase
awareness and the importance of the Census to the people of Fort Collins,(2)increase the mail back
response rate for the 2010 Census; and (3) specifically, promote the Census to typically hard to
enumerate segments of the population,including minorities,lower income families,college students,
and non-English speaking people.
