HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOUNCIL - PROCLAMATION - 03/02/2010 - PROCLAMATION DECLARING MARCH AS NATIONAL WOMENS HI City of Fort Collins PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, American women have played and continue to play a critical role in every sphere of our nation's life; and WHEREAS, American women of every age, race, class and ethnic background served as early leaders in the forefront of every major progressive social change movement,not only to secure their own right of suffrage and equal opportunity, but also in the abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement,the labor union movement,the fight for education,the modern civil rights movement and today in the drive for health care for all; and WHEREAS, despite these contributions the role of American women in history has been overlooked and undervalued in the body of American history; and WHEREAS,the growth of Fort Collins is rooted in the hard work of countless individuals. Accounts of Fort Collins history often portray men, but less often do women receive equal recognition in their role towards helping shape the future. Letters, diaries, pictures, and artifacts reveal that women of early Fort Collins were visionaries,business leaders,community builders,free spirits, mothers, and more. Using courage and good humor,they contributed to the vision of Fort Collins as the thriving community that it is today. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Doug Hutchinson, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim the month of March 2010 to be NATIONAL WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and the seal of the City of Fort Collins this 2nd day of March, A.D. 2010.
