PROCLAMATION
City of Fort Collins
WHEREAS,the United Nations General Assemblydesignated the 22nd of March of each year
as the international observance of World Day for Water,and
WHEREAS, 1.2 billion people lack access to clean water, which is 20% of the world's
population; and
WHEREAS,water-related diseases kill a child every 8 seconds, and are responsible for 80%
of all illnesses and deaths in the developing world. Water-related diseases kill more than 5 million
people every year, more than ten times the number killed in wars;and
WHEREAS, in the poorest countries 1 out of every 5 children fails to reach his or her 5th
birthday, mainly due to infectious and environmental diseases that arise from poor water quality.
Children under the age of 5 are the most affected by poor water supply sanitation; and
WHEREAS, about 6 million people are blind today because of trachoma, which is an eye
infection spread mainly through poor hygiene caused by lack of adequate water supplies and unsafe
environmental sanitation conditions. Studies have found that providing adequate water supplies could
reduce infections rates by25%.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Doug Hutchinson, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby
proclaim March 22,2007 as
WORLD WATER DAY
in the cityof Fort Collins and urge all citizens to become aware of this highlytreatable worldwide crisis.
