PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, self-control is a critical personal quality needed for lasting success; and
WHEREAS, we desire to build upon our heritage and make Fort Collins a place where
families are strong, homes and streets are safe, education is effective, business is productive,
neighbors care about one another, and citizens are free to make wise choices for their lives and
families; and
WHEREAS,we recognize that the health of this community depends upon all of our citizens
being creative in their daily associations with their fellow citizens; and
WHEREAS,the tranquility and orderly operation and development of our City demand that
we implement the key concept of self-control: looking beyond today with focus on future benefits;
knowing our own weaknesses to protect against temptations; restraining ourselves by anticipating
our responses to trying circumstances;turning away when faced with compromising situations;being
accountable for our own attitudes by taking blame when appropriate and by getting help when
needed; and
WHEREAS,by following these suggestions,we as citizens can individually and collectively
improve the quality of our products and the efficiency of our services,focus our efforts on achieving .
our goals, provide our community with an improving competitive edge, and find new avenues for
enriching our lives as we move boldly yet patiently into our developing future.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Doug Hutchinson, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby
proclaim the character of
SELF-CONTROL
"restraining harmful behaviors and passions,while following
helpful and uplifting ones" i
as the community of character focus for the month of January 2010, in the City of Fort Collins.
