Update on the design of the new Northside Aztlan Community Center project and the Children's
Garden at The Gardens on Spring Creek
GENERAL DIRECTION SOUGHT AND SPECIFIC QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED
This is an informational item to update Council on these two projects.
BACKGROUND
New Northside Aztlan Community Center
The City's first recreation center, the Northside Aztlan Community Center(NACC),opened in 1978.
This 15,000 square foot facility has been very popular and has provided much needed indoor
recreation for the community. In 1996 the voters approved funding, through the Building
Community Choices capital program, to replace the aging and deteriorating NACC with a new
community center. Council previously authorized construction of the new NACC on the site of the
current center. The current center will stay in operation while the new center is constructed. It will
then be removed to provide parking for the new center.
A few years ago subsurface contamination was discovered on the site. Through the help of CPES
staff and the Environmental Protection Agency a remediation system has been installed by Public
Service Company(Excel Energy), at considerable expense. This prevents the contamination from
reaching the Poudre River and it also makes this Brownfield site suitable for the new community
center.
The new NACC will be approximately 50,000 square feet and will cost ten million dollars. The
facility design(which is shown in detail in Attachment A) includes:
• Triple gymnasium with elevated track
• Large, three section activity room
• Cardio/weight/exercise room
• Aerobics/dance studio
• 4 multi-use classrooms
• Multi-purpose room
• Computer/tutoring lab
• Lounge and game room
• Kitchen
• Conference room and offices
• Locker rooms, restrooms, lobby, reception area etc.

The grounds around the new community center will include a soccer/turf field, skate park,
playground, basketball court, handball courts (supported by private funding),parking and walking
paths.
Construction of the project is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2006 with the center open to the
public in mid-2007.
The Children's Garden at The Gardens on Spring Creek
The Children's Garden is under construction, with a grand opening anticipated this July. The design
and details about the project are explained in Attachment B. This$500,000 project is being funded
entirely without City funding, including a$200,000 GOCO grant, $100,000 from four local Rotary
Clubs,$25,000 from the Bohemian Foundation,$70,000 from other donors and$75,000 in donated
materials and volunteer labor. This wonderful project is a true community effort, a gift to our
children and a reflection of the caring and generous people who call Fort Collins home.
