RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends adoption of the Ordinance on First Reading. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Article II,Section 3 of the City Charter provides that the compensation of Councilmembers shall be adjusted annually for inflation in accordance with the Denver/Boulder Consumer Price Index. In 2001,Councilmembers were compensated$550 per month,and the Mayor received$825 per month. 110 This Ordinance amends Section 2-575 of the City Code to set the 2002 compensation of Councilmembers at $575 and the compensation of the Mayor at$860. BACKGROUND: At the April 8, 1997 election,the electorate of the City of Fort Collins approved an amendment to the City Charter setting the monthly compensation of Councilmembers and the Mayor at$500 and $750, respectively. In addition, the Charter amendment added language requiring the amounts of Council compensation to be adjusted annually for inflation in accordance with the Denver/Boulder Consumer Price Index. The history of Council compensation since the first adjustment for inflation was made is as follows: Year Mayor Councilmember 1999 $770 $515 2000 $790 $525 2001 $825 $550 The 2001 compensation amounts, adjusted for inflation in accordance with the Denver/Boulder Consumer Price Index are$575 per month for Councilmembers and$860 per month for the Mayor. ORDINANCE NO. 206, 2001 OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS AMENDING SECTION 2-575 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS RELATING TO COUNCILMEMBER COMPENSATION WHEREAS,on April 8, 1997,the electorate of the City approved certain amendments to the City Charter; and WHEREAS, one such amendment was an amendment to Article II, Section 3 of the City Charter, pertaining to the compensation of Councilmembers; and WHEREAS, Article II, Section 3 of the City Charter, as amended, provides that, commencing in 1998, the amounts of compensation of the Mayor and Councilmembers shall be adjusted annually for inflation in accordance with the Denver/Boulder Consumer Price Index;and WHEREAS,the history of Council compensation since the first adjustment for inflation was made is as follows: Year Mayor Councilmember 1999 $770 $515 2000 $790 $525 2001 $825 $550 and WHEREAS, after applying the foregoing inflation factor for the year 2002, the amount of compensation for the Mayor for 2002 should be eight hundred sixty dollars ($860)per month, and for other Councilmembers, five hundred seventy-five dollars ($575) per month. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS that Section 2-575 of the Code of the City of Fort Collins be,and hereby is,amended to read as follows: Sec. 2-575. Compensation of City Councilmembers. Commencing January 1,200121 the compensation for all Councilmembers except the Mayor shall be five hundred€tom 1 dollars($ .)per month and the compensation of the Mayor shall be eight hundred twenty-five dollars ($8 .) per month. These amounts shall be adjusted annually for inflation in accordance with the Denver/Boulder Consumer Price Index. Introduced, considered favorably on first reading, and ordered published this 20th day of November, A.D. 2001, and to be presented for final passage on the 18th day of December, A.D. 2001.
