PROCLAMATION
Cityof Fort Collins
WHEREAS, more than 5 million Americans are now living with Alzheimer's disease, a figure that is
expected to grow to as many as 16 million by mid-century if we do not take action today; and
WHEREAS, there are currently 65,000 people in the state of Colorado living with Alzheimer's;
approximately 3000 people over the age of 65 diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in Latimer County, and
WHEREAS,Alzheimer's disease is not a normal part of aging; and
WHEREAS, because 70% of those with Alzheimer's are cared for at home, we know there are
123,000 family members in Colorado providing$1 billion in unpaid care; and
WHEREAS, every 72 seconds someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease therefore the number
of people with Alzheimer's in Colorado is expected to increase to 140,000 by 2025; and
WHEREAS, while you will never meet a survivor of Alzheimer's disease as there is no cure, there is
hope with 25 medications currently in clinical trials and researchers making great strides in developing better
treatments and eventually a cure for Alzheimer's disease; and
WHEREAS, with increased awareness for Alzheimer's disease and the support of 65,000 Champions
with the disease across Colorado; 5 million in the U.S., we can create a world without Alzheimer's disease;
and
WHEREAS, the Alzheimer's Association is asking residents of Fort Collins to join the fight against
Alzheimer's as a Champion -- opening hearts and minds to build understanding for Alzheimer's, voicing
support for those who have lost the ability to speak for themselves, and moving the cause forward by
volunteering or making a donation.
THEREFORE, I, Doug Hutchinson, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim
tomorrow, November 21,2007 as
CHAMPIONS FOR ALZHEIMER'S DAY
and call all citizens of Fort Collins to join in the fight against Alzheimer's disease by becoming a Champion
at alz.org.
