SUBJECT
First Reading of Ordinance No. 068, 2008, Designating the Myers House, 902 Mathews Street, as
a Fort Collins Landmark Pursuant to Chapter 14 of the City Code.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends adoption of the Ordinance on First Reading.
At a public hearing held on March 13, 2008, the Landmark Preservation Commission voted
unanimously to recommend designation of this property as a landmark for its significance to Fort
Collins as a very nice example o,Pthejun v n the ftsman architectural style.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY ko. "
The owners of the property, Dale and Mary Eggleston, are initiating this request for Fort Collins
Landmark designation for the property. The Myers House qualifies for individual Landmark
designation under Landmark Standard(3). The building on the property embodies many distinctive
characteristics of the Bungalow variation ofthe Craftsman architectural style popular during the early
twentieth century. The large partially enclosed front porch, front gabled roof, wide eaves, and large
chimney exemplify this design and make the Myers House a contributing element of the Laurel
National Register District that is worthy of Landmark Designation.
BACKGROUND
Architecture
Built in 1924 by Chas G. Crsh ro t 902 Nldiews continues to embody the
characteristics of a Craftsman Bungalow despite some modifications. Immediately following the
house's construction, a matching garage was added to the property in 1925. This addition was
followed in 1938 with abasement stairway entry on the right side of the house that was covered with
a shed awning. Building permit records indicate that the garage was enlarged two years later and
photographic evidence from the Tax Assessor's Office shows that it was torn down sometime
between 1948 and 1969. In the late 1990s, Egress Windows that do not visibly interfere with the
structure's historical integrity were added to the rear of the house. The front porch was also

remodeled during this time: the stucco was replaced with siding, and a gate and several supporting
features were added to the entry. Despite these changes to the property, the Myers House continues
to maintain its historical integrity as a Bungalow variation of the Craftsman architectural style.
History
Chas and his wife Mary lived in t trtiome Jelme of it nstruction until at least 1934. City
directories indicate that the property was eventually sold to Roy and Nellie Darling who owned the
house from at least 1948 until 1959. The home has since been predominantly occupied by renters.
Dale and Mary Eggleston, the current owners seeking Landmark Designation, purchased the Myers
House in 1972.
