BACKGROUND
The Prairie style is a truly indigenous American architectural style that originated in Chicago early
in the 20th century, and was most popular between 1900 and 1920. Hallmarks of the style are a
square or rectangular plan, with symmetrical fagade, a low-pitched roof, and one-story wings or
porches that are subordinate to the main two-story mass. The entrance forms a major focal point.
The Remington House is an excellent example of one of the four principal variants of the style, the
side-gabled subtype. The house is a re ular o-sto ,StuNhasflat
uring a moderately-pitched
side gable roof, and a stucco ext or. oof s od` iang, and boxed eaves with
exposed purlins. The fagade (we contai a cen ctwo leaf multi-light doors are

foundation, with massive rectangular piers. The style's horizontal effect is emphasized through
horizontal trim bands and window groupings. Windows are double-hung,with divided light upper
sashes, often associated with the contemporaneous Craftsman style. Another characteristic of the
style is the use of decorative geometric or floral ornamentation. On the Remington House, this
ornamentation takes the shape of squared lattice details at the points of the eaves as well as on the
end gables.
