City of Fort Collins PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, too much violence exists in our communiy and in our schools while more people in our
communiy believe that violence is an ordinary way of resolving conflict, and
WHEREAS, conflict comes in many forms including gang and family violence; hate crimes;
playground, physical, sexual, and verbal violence; and violence in music; and
WHEREAS, we are exposed to a considerable amount of violence on television with numerous studies
showing that exposure of our children to television violence desensitizes our children and ourselves to
aggressive behavior, crime, and all forms of violence in our socie y while research reveals that by the age of
eighteen the average child has witnessed on television more than 200,000 acts of violence, including 18,000
simulated murders; and
WHEREAS, heavy exposure to violence is one of many causes of aggressive behavior, crime, and
violence in our communiy where more than 900 crimes of violence were prosecuted in Larimer Couny
District Court and Couny Court lastyear.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ray Martinez, Mayor of the Ciy of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim
Thursday, October 12, 2000 as
TURN OFF THE VIOLENCE DAY
and encourage our communiy to resolve conflict by communicating, listening, and talking; by supporting,
trusting, and respecting each other,• by spending time together and affirming with praise; by strengthening
our families through clear rules and high values; by using positive nonviolent ways to resolve conflict, and
by being aware of and selective concerning our choices in entertainment.
