SUBJECT
First Reading of Ordinance No. 149, 2008, Amending Section 2-575 of the City Code Relating to
Councilmember Compensation.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends adoption of the Ordinance on First Reading.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Article II, Section 3 of the City Charter directs that the compensation of Councilmembers shall be
adjusted annually for inflation in accordance with the Denver/Boulder Consumer Price Index. In
2008,Councilmembers were compensated$650 per month,and the Mayor received$970 per month.
This Ordinance amends Section 2-575 of the City Code to set the 2009 compensation of
Councilmembers at $675 per month and the compensation of the Mayor at $1,005 per month, as
required by the City Charter.
BACKGROUND
At the April 8, 1997 election, the voters of the City of Fort Collins approved an amendment to the
City Charter setting the monthly compensation of Councilmembers and the Mayor at$500 and$750,
respectively. In addition,the Charter amendment added language requiring the amounts of Council
compensation to be adjusted annually for inflation in accordance with the Denver/Boulder Consumer
Price Index. The history of Council compensation since the first adjustment for inflation was made
is as follows:

The 2009 compensation amounts, adjusted for inflation in accordance with the Denver/Boulder
Consumer Price Index are$675 per month for Councilmembers and$1005 per month for the Mayor.
ORDINANCE NO. 149, 2008
OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS
AMENDING SECTION 2-575 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF
FORT COLLINS RELATING TO COUNCILMEMBER COMPENSATION
WHEREAS , on April 8 , 1997, the electorate of the City approved certain amendments to the
City Charter; and
WHEREAS , one such amendment was an amendment to Article II, Section 3 of the City
Charter, pertaining to the compensation of Councilmembers; and
WHEREAS , Article II, Section 3 of the City Charter, as amended, provides that,
commencing in 1998 , the amounts of compensation of the Mayor and Councilmembers shall be
adjusted annually for inflation in accordance with the Denver/Boulder Consumer Price Index
(estimated to be 3 . 7%); and
WHEREAS , the history of Council compensation since the first adjustment for inflation was
made is as follows :

WHEREAS , after applying the foregoing inflation factor for the year 2009, the amount of
compensation for the Mayor for 2009 should be one thousand five dollars ($ 1 ,005) per month, and
for other Councilmembers, six hundred seventy-five dollars ($675 ) per month.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT
COLLINS that Section 2-575 of the Code of the City of Fort Collins be, and hereby is, amended to
read as follows :
Sec . 2 -575. Compensation of City Councilmembers.
Commencing January 1 , 20082009 , the compensation for all Councilmembers
except the Mayor shall be six hundred € fty seventy-five dollars ($6-50675 .) per
month and the compensation of the Mayor shall be nine hundred seve one
thousand five dollars ($9-701 ,005 .) per month. These amounts shall be adjusted
annually for inflation in accordance with the Denver/Boulder Consumer Price Index.
Introduced, considered favorably on first reading, and ordered published this 2nd day of
December, A.D. 2008 , and to be presented for final passage on the 16th day of December, A.D .
