Resolution 2000-145 Recognizing the Need to Support the Youth of Fort Collins.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends adoption of the Resolution.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The City of Fort Collins has always recognized the need to support the youth of our community
and is committed to help provide this support. The City provides a wide variety of facilities and
services for young people including:
• The Youth Activity Center and Youth/Teen Center at Northside Aztlan Community Center
10 which had 176,000 contacts with young people in 1999. The Recreation Division had over
700,000 contacts with youth in 1999.
• The Farm at Lee Martinez Park with 98,500 visitors in 1999.
• Summer Youth basketball with 1,000 participants in 2000.
• EPIC (Edora Pool and Ice Center), Mulberry Pool, and the outdoor pool at City Park.
• The Recreation-At-Your Door (RAD) program, which brings recreation activities to young
people who may not be able to get to recreation facilities and BOB (Boogie Out Boredom)
the Bus which targets primarily low income neighborhoods, picks up kids, and takes them to
recreation facilities.
• Youth Music Fest, sponsored by the Youth Advisory Board.
• Produced, with Americotps, a comprehensive youth services and activities guide — 10,000
Focus Guides for Teens in 2000.
• The Youth Employment Program, which employed 66 young people in 1999. In addition,
over half of the 1,200 hourly positions in the City's Parks and Recreation Department are
filled by youths, teens, and college students.

The City also supports young people by working with other agencies including:
• Poudre School District
• The Boys and Girls Club of Fort Collins
• Larimer County
The City, in cooperation with Poudre School District, has also committed over $600,000 in
Building Community Choices funds to provide young people with seven new or renovated
softball/baseball fields, an in-line hockey rink and skate park at Edora Park and renovation of the
skate park at Northside Aztlan Community Center.
The City Council, by passing Resolution 2000-145, recognizes the importance of making an
ongoing commitment to the youth of Fort Collins. The Council realizes that by providing young
people with positive life experiences, safe places to learn and grow, caring adults, creative and
fun activities, and marketable skills, that our young people will grow up to be healthy, caring and
responsible adults.

OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS
RECOGNIZING THE NEED TO SUPPORT THE YOUTH OF FORT COLLINS
WHEREAS, the City of Fort Collins recognizes the need to support the youth of our
community and is committed to help provide this support; and
WHEREAS, the City provides a wide variety of facilities and services for young people,
including the Youth Activity Center,the Youth/Teen Center atNorthside Aztlan Community Center,
the Farm at Lee Martinez Park,EPIC,Mulberry Pool,the pool at City Park,the RAD Van and BOB
the Bus Programs, and the Youth Employment Program; and
WHEREAS,the City also supports youth by working with other agencies including Poudre
School District,Larimer County,the Boys and Girls Club,and numerous youth sports programs;and
WHEREAS, the City supports the efforts of America's Promise to strengthen the character
and competence of youth through the provision of the five promises of America's Promise: caring
adults; safe places; healthy start; marketable skills and opportunities to serve; and
WHEREAS,at the instigation of the City Council an enhanced partnership has been formed
with Poudre School District and the Latimer County Commissioners to develop a multi faceted
• approach to supporting the youth of our community; and
WHEREAS,the City Council recognizes the importance of making an ongoing commitment
to the youth of Fort Collins.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT
COLLINS that the City of Fort Collins hereby expresses its ongoing commitment to provide the
youth of our community with positive life experiences,safe places to learn and grow,caring adults,
creative and fun activities and marketable skills so they can grow to be healthy, caring and
responsible adults.
Passed and adopted at a regular meeting of the City Council held this 21 st day of November,
A.D. 2000.
