HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOUNCIL - PROCLAMATION - 10/07/2008 - PROCLAMATION DECLARING OCTOBER 11, 2008 AS NORTHER City of Fort Collins PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, throughout our history, American Indian and Alaska Native peoples have been an integral part of the American character and remain a vital cultural, political, social and moral presence; and WHEREAS, Tribal America has brought to this great country certain values and ideas that have become ingrained in the American spirit: that humans can thrive and prosper in harmony with the natural environment; that people from very different backgrounds, cultures, religions, and traditions can come together to build a great country; and that diversity can be a source of strength rather than division; and WHEREAS,a Native American presence has been established in the Northern Colorado area for over 12,000 years; and WHEREAS,today,Native Americans continue to contribute to the social,economic and cultural prosperity of Fort Collins; and WHEREAS, the word pow-wow originates from the Algonquian word pau wau and refers to a gathering that includes singing, dancing, and socializing where the public is invited to attend as well as participate; and WHEREAS,local resources such as the Northern Colorado Intertribal Pow-wow Association,and the Office of Native American Student Services at Colorado State University play a vital role in assisting and providing the Fort Collins community with diverse programming. NOW,THEREFORE I,Doug Hutchinson,Mayor of the City of Fort Collins,do hereby proclaim October 11, 2008 as NORTHERN COLORADO INTERTRIBAL POW-WOW ASSOCIATION DAY in the city of Fort Collins and urge all residents to participate in scheduled events.
