HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOUNCIL - PROCLAMATION - 10/19/1999 - PROCLAMATION PROCLAIMING SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28, 199 Mavor City of Fort Collins PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the city of Fort Collins was named for Camp Collins which was established in 1862 near Laporte and named after Colonel William Collins; and WHEREAS,by provision of the MorrillAct of 1862 which provided grants of land to states for support of colleges that would, among other things, teach "military tactics", the governor of the Territory of Colorado signed a bill in 1870 establishing Colorado's first authorized college, the Agricultural College of Colorado (known today as Colorado State University); and WHEREAS, the Congress of the United States passed the National Defense Act creating the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) in 1916 and this observance of "Salute to the Armed Forces" at a land grant institution has a very special significance for Colorado State University and the entire community of Fort Collins, and WHEREAS, Colorado State University will honor all those who now serve and have served in our armed forces at a special presentation prior to the Colorado State vs. the University of Utah football game at Hughes Stadium on October 28. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ray Martinez, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim Saturday, October 28 as SALUTE TO THE ARMED FORCES DAY in the cite of Fort Collins and ask the community to take time to honor the many men and women who have served our great country through their dedicated service in the anned forces.
