City of Fort Collins PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the month of May is traditionally designated and observed throughout the nation as
Older Americans Month—the 2005 theme is " CELEBRATE Long-Term Living," in recognition of older
Americans who are living longer, healthier lives that are more productive; and
WHEREAS, it is important to acknowledge that older persons should live lives of dignity and
independence,free from fears, myths and misconceptions about aging; and
WHEREAS, it is also important to recognize the importance of utilizing the talents, creativity and
experience of our older citizens and encourage maximum opportunity for their involvement in regular
employment, volunteer service, civic affairs and all aspects of community life; and
WHEREAS, Colorado's population of persons 60 years of age and older is expected to rise to 1.2
million by the year 2020; and
WHEREAS, the Fort Collins Senior Center, in its 10th year at its current location, has acted as a
catalyst to encourage older adults in our community to enrich their lives through activity and knowledge;
and
WHEREAS, it is appropriate that Fort Collins joins the nation in honoring and designating the
month of May as a time to celebrate the contributions of older Americans and to rededicate our efforts to
better serve them.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Doug Hutchinson, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby proclaim
the month of May, 2005 as
OLDER AMERICANS MONTH
in the city of Fort Collins and hereby urge all citizens to honor elders during this month, this year, and this
millennium,and promote and participate in activities and services that contribute to the health,welfare,and
independence of our older citizens.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF,I have hereunto set my hand and the seal of the City of Fort Collins this
