City of Fort Collins PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, on Sunday, December 26, 2004 a massive earthquake and resulting violent
tsunamis pummeled 11 countries surrounding the Indian Ocean causing massive destruction and
the loss of more than 150,000 lives; and
WHEREAS, it remains unknown how many lives are still unaccounted for at this time,
however, it is estimated that several thousand Americans are among the missing; and
WHEREAS, nations from around the world have come forward to offer help and financial
aid to those Asian nations devastated by the forces of nature; and
WHEREAS, the community of Fort Collins has responded to this disaster by donating
thousands of dollars along with badly needed medical supplies to assist this international relief
effort; and
WHEREAS, the need for continued support from donations and volunteers will remain
throughout the coming weeks and months to help these nations recover from the loss of lives and the
destruction left behind from the tsunamis; and
WHEREAS, locally, the Centennial Chapter oftheAmerican Red Cross continues it efforts
to raise funds to be used to support the relief effort provided by the International Federation of Red
Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ray Martinez, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby
proclaim January 18, 2005 as a time to remember those men, women, and children who lost their
lives, homes, and loved ones, to thank those who have given freely of their resources, and to
encourage others to support the efforts of the Centennial Chapter of the American Red Cross and
other relief agencies in this time of monumental loss.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and the seal of the City of Fort
Collins this 18th day of January, A.D. 2005.
