City of Fort Collins PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, in 1879 Franklin Avery built the house at 328 West Mountain Avenue where he lived
with his wife Sarah and three children Edgar, Marietta Louise, and Ethel; and
WHEREAS, the Avery House has endured as an excellent monument to a Fort Collins pioneer
family and as a historic tie to the past; and
WHEREAS,in 1972 the Poudre Landmarks Foundation,Inc.was formed to explore the purchase and
preservation ofproperty placed on the National Historic Register, and in 1974 the City of Fort Collins wisely
purchased the house to preserve this tie to our past; and
WHEREAS, in 1976 an agreement was signed between the City of Fort Collins and the Poudre
Landmarks Foundation to restore and renovate the Avery House; and
WHEREAS, volunteers from the Avery House Historic District Guild have donated countless hours
and worked continuously since 1981 to restore,preserve, and interpret the property; and
WHEREAS, these volunteers continue to open the house to the public every Sunday and Wednesday
afternoon from 1:00- 3:00 and conduct tours at no cost to visitors; and
WHEREAS, the Avery House Historic District Guild contributes to education by sharing history with
more than 1,000 second grade students who study Fort Collins history.
NOW, THEREFORE,I, Ray Martinez,Mayor of the city of Fort Collins, do hereby recognize 2004
as the 125th anniversary of the Avery House and ask the community to voice its appreciation to the Avery
House Historic District Guild and the Poudre Landmarks Foundation, Inc.for their efforts to preserve and
share with us this wonderful historic property as a window to our past.
