City of Fort Collins PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS,National Depression ScreeningDay is a nationwide program designed to provide information
about the signs, symptoms and treatment of depression and to give individuals the opportunity to find out if tlrep
may be suffering from depression by taking a written screening test and discussing the results with a mental health
professional; and
WHEREAS, depression affects over 17 million Americans each year with less than one-half of the people
suffering from depression seeking treatment; and
WHEREAS, suicide is associated with depression — most people who take their own life do so dining a
depressive episode; and
WHEREAS, it is important to stress treatmentfor suicide, because with treatment, suicidal thoughts will
often disappear and unfortunately, the majority of people who commit suicide are not in treatment at the time of
their act, and
WHEREAS, suicide was the 9th leading cause of death in the nation, the 7th leading cause of death in
9olorado, and during 1999 in Larimer County 20 suicides have been committed with an estimated 500 attempts;
and
WHEREAS, since the inception of National Depression Screening Day, more than 400,000 people have
attended screening and nearly 125,000 people have received treatment as a result.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ray Martinez, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins do hereyr proclaim October
7, 1999 as
NATIONAL DEPRESSION SCREENING DAY
in the city of Fort Collins.
