City of Fort Collins
WHEREAS, the character quality or compasgion is a critical personal quality needed for
lasting success; and
WHEREAS, we desire to build upon our heritage and make Fort Collins a place where
families are strong, homes and streets are safe, education is effective, business is productive,
neighbors care about one another, and citizens are free to make wise choices for their lives and
families; and
WHEREAS, we recognize that the health of this community depends upon all of our citizens
being able to thrive in their activities and their associations; and
WHEREAS, the tranquility and orderly operation and development of our city demand that
we implement the key concept of compassion: stopping to help others in our family, community or
workplace relationships; listening carefully to their needs, fears and pains; responding to those
issues appropriately and responsibly; getting involved with others' lives and being committed to
being of benefit to them; healing and giving solace to others who are hurting; and,
WHEREAS, by following these suggestions for developing awareness and modifying our
behavior, we as citizens individually and collectively can show genuine interest in one another, can
build bridges that hold our community together and allow individuals to relate positively, can
discover the needs of others, can show gratefulness when our own needs are met, and can honestly
reciprocate in helping one another as we move boldly yet patiently into our emerging future as a
culture of excellence.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Doug Hutchinson, Mayor of the City of Fort Collins, do hereby
proclaim the character trait of
COMPASSION
"helping others in their needs and being there whenever necessary to heal their
hurts"
as the community of character focus for the month of April 2008, in the City of Fort Collins.
